SPORTS COACH: ASSISTANT AND ADMINISTRATIONSt John's Pre-Preparatory forms part of St John's College, which is a world-class Christian, African school
situated on a magnificent campus in Houghton, Johannesburg, offering quality education from Pre-Primary to Post-Matric. The school has an outstanding academic record and an excellent reputation in sport, music, drama, art and debating.
We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Sports Coach Assistant that is able to fulfill the
responsibilities of a Gross Motor Skills Instructor and/or Physical Education teacher to join our team. The
Sports Coach Assistant plays a significant role in the coaching of sport in Pre-Preparatory and works closely with the Director of Sport, leading Physical Education lessons and coaching across a number of different sporting activities.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for planning and delivering engaging gross motor lessons for students aged between two and five years old. Additionally, the teacher will oversee and support afternoon coaching staff and assist with physical education lessons for grades 0, 1, and 2.
All students should have the opportunity to receive appropriate coaching and to play in competitive
fixtures according to their ability. Talented students should be stretched and challenged, and have the
opportunity to compete at the highest possible level.
Main Responsibilities
? Lesson Planning and Delivery:
? Develop and implement age-appropriate gross motor skill activities for children aged 2-5.
? Create a fun, inclusive, and safe learning environment that encourages physical activity and motor skill development.
? Adapt lessons to meet the varying needs and abilities of children.
? Afternoon Coaching Supervision:
? Coordinate with and supervise afternoon coaching staff to ensure high-quality delivery of gross motor activities.
? Provide guidance and support to coaches, fostering a collaborative and effective team environment.
? Monitor and evaluate the performance of coaching staff, providing feedback and professional development opportunities as needed.
? Assisting with Grade 0, 1, and 2 Lessons:
? Assist coaches with the planning and execution of physical education lessons for grades 0, 1, and 2.
? Facilitate activities that promote physical fitness, coordination, and teamwork.
? Support students during lessons, ensuring active participation and engagement.
? Reporting and Documentation:
? Prepare detailed reports on the progress and outcomes of the gross motor skills program.
? Maintain accurate records of children's participation and development.
? Collaborate with colleagues to analyze data and improve program effectiveness.
? Communicate findings and recommendations to parents, staff, and school administrators.
? The Sports Coach Assistant is expected to be available at all times that school sport takes place,
including weekends during term-time, half terms and some tours during holidays.
Minimum requirements
? A degree in Physical Education, Early Childhood Development, or a related field
? Experience working with young children in a physical education or early childhood setting
? SACE registration
? Prior experience in coaching or supervising staff is advantageous
Skills and Attributes:
? Strong knowledge of gross motor development and physical activity best practices for young children.
? Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with children, parents, and staff.
? Organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
? Creativity and enthusiasm for developing engaging and innovative lesson plans.
? Commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all children.
? Physical Requirements- The role involves physical activity, including demonstrating exercises and participating in activities with children.
? Must be able to coach most sporting codes and be able to produce age appropriate lessons of the sports we do at St John's.
