The anticipated start date is February 1, 2025.The Citizen Lab ( https://citizenlab.ca/ ) is an interdisciplinary laboratory focusing on research, development, and high-level strategic policy and legal engagement at the intersection of information and communication technologies, human rights, and global security. The Senior Research Associate will report to the Citizen Lab Director.The Senior Research Associate will be responsible for leading research projects across a range of topics including but not limited to state surveillance of and digital threats against civil society in China and Chinese diaspora communities outside China, as well as biometric surveillance and digital identification programs implemented by state and non-state actors in key countries, including but not limited to China.Duties:Conducting primary research.Collecting and analyzing data.Producing written reports.Presenting research at public forums.Contributing to grant reporting and overall research program planning.Supervising junior staff, students, and fellows.Minimum Qualifications:Education: PhD in political science with a focus on East Asia.Experience: 7 years of experience in research and project management. Demonstrated academic publication record in relevant areas. Experience in consulting with and writing for think tanks and other non-academic organizations.Skills: Excellent research and analysis skills as well as strong oral and written communication skills. Superior problem-solving and analytical ability. Demonstrated knowledge of research methods and literature in relevant fields (e.g., Role of technology in authoritarian states, political repression in China). Demonstrated ability to communicate complex research methods and technical issues to individuals from a range of research and technical backgrounds. Fluent in writing and speaking in Mandarin Chinese.Other: Demonstrated ability to provide mentorship and act as a responsible supervisor for junior researchers and students. Demonstrated sensitivity to organizational priorities and able to meet multiple deadlines. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. Shows initiative, good judgment and tact. Detail-oriented and accurate.
