Role The Senior Legal Advisor will play a critical role in assisting CIJ to fulfil its advisory services mandate. This position involves providing high-level legal advice and technical assistance to African governments in their law reform efforts. The Senior Legal Advisor will be responsible for delivering tailored legal solutions that align with CIJ's thematic focus areas, contributing to the development of robust legal frameworks that support sustainable development across the continent. Responsibilities Legal Advisory and Technical Assistance: Provide expert legal advice on law reform initiatives, including the development of legislative frameworks, policy strategies, and regulatory mechanisms. Assist governments in drafting, reviewing, and revising legislation to align with best practices and international standards. Develop and deliver high-quality legal memoranda, briefs, and reports that offer practical solutions for complex legal issues. Policy Development and Strategic Guidance: Offer strategic guidance on policy development related to governance, economic development, and social mobility. Engage with government officials, civil society organizations, and international partners to advocate for and advance legal reforms. Analyse and interpret socio-political and economic trends to inform and shape law reform strategies. Knowledge Sharing: Develop and coordinate specialised training initiatives to build the capacity of government officials and other stakeholders in legal reform processes. Contribute to CIJ research and knowledge products, including model laws, policy briefs, toolkits, and case studies, to share best practices and lessons learned. Represent CIJ at regional and international forums, contributing to thought leadership in law reform and governance. Project Management: Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of advisory projects, ensuring they are delivered on time and within budget. Coordinate with other CIJ teams to ensure alignment between advisory services and overall organizational objectives. Prepare and present project reports, updates, and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders. Business Development and Partnership Building: Identify opportunities for collaboration and partnership to enhance the impact of CIJ's advisory services. Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, law firms, international organizations, and civil society groups. Work closely with the CIJ Executive Director and other senior staff to align advisory services with the organization's strategic goals. Requirements A bachelor's degree in law is required; a master's degree in law, or a related field is highly desirable. A minimum of 10 years of experience in legal advisory services, legislative drafting, or law reform. Proven experience working with African governments or international organizations on law reform projects. Extensive experience in reputable law firms, government agencies, international development agencies, or consulting firms. Strong expertise in one or more of the CIJ's thematic areas: governance, economic development, and social mobility. Demonstrated commitment to promoting good governance, economic development, and social mobility in Africa. Ability to work independently and as part of a multicultural team, managing multiple projects and priorities. Strong leadership and mentorship capabilities, with a commitment to building the capacity of colleagues and partners. High levels of integrity, professionalism, and discretion, with a proven ability to handle sensitive issues.
