PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: To fill a vacant position in the History Subject group; to ensure continuous quality teaching and to contribute in strengthening the Subject Group's research outputs as well as to sustain impact through community engagement initiatives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Teaching and Learning: Teaching modules in History annually.Research:Supervision of History honours research projects and MA as well as PhD studies;Create and facilitate new research projects, beneficial to staff teamwork and postgraduate student engagement;Publishing own and collaborative research in acceptable peer-reviewed journals and books;Attending and presenting papers at national and international conferences;Contributing to activities and initiatives that relate to student skills development; practicalizing History in the public domain; public lectures and supporting/facilitating history-driven needs by communities. Thus in general to find meaningful opportunities to establish and continue community engagement initiatives that bring research and teaching into the service of community projects and development.Academic Citizenship: Serve on editorial boards and academic association committees, participate in the external evaluation of assessments for other universities, and participate in peer review processes for academic publication.Leadership in the NWU: From time to time serve in faculty committees as well as in subject and programme leadership positions as may become available.Administration: Assisting with administration pertaining to teaching and research and community engagement projects related to History and the School of Social Science.Marketing: Recruitment and attracting initiatives for undergraduate and postgraduate students.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: A PhD (NQF level 10) in History.A minimum of 5 years' experience in teaching and learning at undergraduate and postgraduate level at a reputable tertiary institution.Successful completion of Masters supervision.A substantial record of quality publication in accredited disciplinary academic journals and/or in books published by reputable academic presses.RECOMMENDATIONS / ADDED ADVANTAGES: Membership with Historical and Cultural History Societies.KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES: Develop quality undergraduate and postgraduate curricula.Competent administrative skills pertaining to research and teaching.Knowledge of current higher education teaching/pedagogical approaches.Online learning platform competency.Knowledge of funding systems and how to secure funding.Conduct independent historical research and publish in reputable, highly cited journals and with respected academic book publishers.Communicate well both verbally and in writing.Be able to work independently and as part of a team in the various multilingual and multicultural environments of the NWU.Be able to work well with a diverse group of colleagues, students, and other university stakeholders.BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES: Must have the capacity to mentor senior students and junior colleagues.Must be able to effectively independently and as part of a team.Must be able to work well with a diverse range of colleagues, students, and stakeholders.Must be able to effectively resolve conflicts as may arise in the workplace.REMUNERATION: The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
