Purpose of Role
To provide installation, maintenance, repairs and replacement of mechanical and electrical equipment and fixtures for the laboratory in line with MHSA (Mine Health and Safety Act) and relevant COPs and SOPs to ensure safe, reliable, and optimal performance of equipment.
Role Context
Operational Delivery
Safely execute critical maintenance tasks by proactively inspecting all equipment including but not limited to generators, transformers, compressors at the lab in line with set standards and procedures.
Participate in and execute lab shutdown activities to ensure timely completion of shutdown activities as per the scheduled plan and defined timelines and effectively communicate and coordinate among the team to prevent delays and minimise downtime.
Assemble, install and test all electrical components and mechanical equipment including apparatus and fixtures using hand tools and power tools to ensure safe and secure equipment utilisation in line with safety standards.
Diagnose and correct any system malfunctions in order to locate any causes of breakdowns and put corrective measures in place to minimise downtime.
Evaluate and analyse through root cause analysis to determine breakdown causes or malfunctioning equipment and structure to identify areas for modifications or repairs and execute corrective actions.
Participate in the planning of equipment layout and execute layout and installation activities based on specifications.
Implement a system for tracking equipment performance and identifying areas for enhancement by regularly reviewing and updating maintenance procedures based on lessons learned.
Execute electrical maintenance tasks using a standardised wiring procedure to ensure electrical safety and apply proper wiring techniques whilst also implementing a preventative maintenance schedule for electrical components.
Resource Management
Determine resource needs and management thereof within own area of responsibility to achieve individual role outcomes.
Maintain good housekeeping principles to ensure area of work is kept clean and in a safe condition, removing all unused equipment or tools.
Follow a standardised commissioning procedure by conducting final inspections before equipment handover and ensure proper documentation and communication for a seamless handover process.
Stakeholder Relations
Communicate with internal and/or external stakeholders, where required, to achieve work objectives and to maintain relationships.
Advise management and end-users regarding continued utilisation of equipment by highlighting potential hazards and risks to ensure safety and minimise risk.
Collaborate with the operations and engineering team to understand customer needs and implement predictive maintenance strategies to minimize downtime and optimise asset care processes based on equipment performance data.
Compliance, Risk and Safety
Conduct pre-work risk assessment prior to performing any tasks by isolating and testing to identify potential risks and put controls in place to mitigate risk.
Provide clear guidelines and expectations to assistants and contractors and conduct regular training and knowledge transfer to ensure all personnel are aware of safety protocols and quality standards.
Conduct regular safety audits, utilise and encourage personal protective equipment (PPE) and clearly communicate safety concerns.
Follow a comprehensive inspection checklist based on industry standards to apply effective inspection techniques and conduct regular equipment audits to ensure compliance.

Grade 12 (NQF 4)
Certifications:
Red sealed Millwright Trade certificate or SAQA Verified Millwright Trade Certificate
Job specific experience:
Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience
