The Managing Director (MD) is responsible for developing and driving high-level strategies, holding leaders accountable for their teams and responsibilities, and making major business decisions that enable the company to meet its Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG).
The MD ensures accountability for hitting business targets by monitoring overall progress on key metrics and translating strategic objectives into tangible and short-term goals, thereby driving exceptional operational execution within the organization.
The MD is also responsible for key strategic decision-making, problem-solving, coordinating stakeholders, and ensuring consistent communication within the organization and between external parties and clients.
Additionally, the MD manages finances, technology, and clients across the entire organization, fostering a positive work environment and driving the financial and strategic growth of the company.
Key Responsibilities: Setting & Implementing Strategy: Collaborate with the Executive Team to create strategic objectives based on the company's BHAG, considering risks, returns, and sustainability.
Formulate and drive the implementation of the strategic plan that guides the direction of the business.
Frequently evaluate the strategy to determine its viability and adapt it when required.
Ensure the Executive Team drives the strategy and creates effective and efficient systems and processes aligned with the strategy.
Continuously improve systems, processes, and people within the organization in collaboration with the Executive Team.
Conduct quarterly strategy sessions with the Executive Team to assess progress and outline challenges.
Evaluate and assess the organization's progress in reaching the BHAG, ensuring employees achieve their strategic goals.
Research and gather data to understand the market and broader economy for informed business decisions.
Reflect annually on the business's performance in alignment with the strategy and update the strategy as needed.
Communicate the strategy to the entire organization, helping leaders understand their role and empowering their teams.
Running the Business: Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring company policies and procedures are executed effectively.
Manage company contracts with clients and suppliers, as well as company leases.
Strategize with the Financial Manager on BEE planning and community support initiatives.
Receive monthly forecast figures from the Sales Director and identify upcoming challenges.
Develop methods to address and solve organizational challenges.
Driving Financial Performance: Finalize budgets with the Executive Team, Head of Sales & Marketing, and Finance Manager before each financial year.
Receive daily cash flow statements from the Finance Manager to understand the business's financial health.
Gain advice from the Finance Manager on investment planning and enable implementation.
Oversee procurement, check BEE levels for big suppliers, and review agreements for subcontractors.
Oversee tax and audit planning, allocate funds into a tax account, and meet with auditors biannually.
Client & Supplier Management: Build strong relationships with clients to maintain revenue growth.
Attend client networking events to maintain relationships.
Sustain good relationships with key customers and ensure smooth operations.
Maintain effective relationships with existing suppliers and stay updated on their developments.
Ensure core relationships with suppliers and partners are maintained.
Leadership: Mentor and guide the Executive Team to deliver on strategic objectives and live the company's values.
Hold formal and informal meetings with the Executive Team, providing support and guidance.
Identify leadership challenges and help individuals develop as leaders.
Provide constructive feedback and have regular check-ins with the Executive Team.
Conduct quarterly performance conversations and formal performance sessions biannually.
Set an example by acting professionally and respectfully in all interactions.
Motivate and drive staff morale through initiatives and recognition.
Oversee recruitment, including reviewing CVs and meeting final candidates.
