Founded in 1994, OW has a focus on providing a unique tertiary platform where practice-led tuition links traditional fine art practice with the applied arts. Emphasis is placed on continual innovation within curricula so as to maintain relevance in the rapidly evolving creative arts industries. Open Window is known for: Bachelor of Creative Technologies Bachelor of Film Arts Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communication Design Bachelor of Arts Honours in Visual Communication Postgraduate Diploma in Creative Practice About the MakerSpace The Open Window MakerSpace is an in-house advanced fabrication facility, which offers our students, staff and Alumni a wide range of specialised tools, machines, devices and electronic components. The purpose of the MakerSpace is to provide training to the Open Window community and to lower the cost of fabrication to encourage rapid prototyping, technical exploration and ultimately more richly complex final projects. The MakerSpace offers access to the following advanced fabrication machines: FDM 3D Printing Resin Printing Vinyl Cutting Large Format Printing Sublimation Woodworking equipment and hand tools Printmaking facilities (screen printing, etching and lino cutting) The MakerSpace offers access to the following libraries: General Device Library VR Headset Library Electronics Library Materials Library The Stellenbosch Maker Space is in development – along with our new campus developments. The successful candidate will oversee this progression during their tenure. About the Role As the MakerSpace Technician, you will be managing the MakerSpace and the fabrication equipment on a daily basis. You will be responsible for ensuring the seamless operation of the space and equipment, as well as providing all necessary resources for anyone requiring access. You will also be responsible for assisting students and staff with the use of the space and equipment, conducting training sessions, and being present to support during practical sessions. A working knowledge of the below fabrication machines/techniques is needed. Responsibilities & Duties – Technician: As a MakerSpace technician, your primary responsibilities and duties will include: Utilising the various fabrication machines and accompanying software Management of materials and electronic library stock Management of supplier relationships for MakerSpace stock Arranging deliveries of material and electronic library stock Processing student and staff fabrication job requests (payment and logging) Facilitating equipment training for the Open Window community. Providing or arranging for the maintenance of the fabrication machines to ensure a consistent service Regular calibration and servicing of the fabrication machines to ensure consistent service Monitoring the booking and returns, as well as the general upkeep of the device library, which includes mobile devices and VR headsets Fabrication of school-related job requests Managing the scheduling and booking of training workshops Assisting students and staff with projects and executions Assessing potential opportunities for growth and development within the space Management of events related to the MakerSpace Promoting collaboration between faculties General Requirements: Good language and communication skills Good time management Interested in fabrication technologies Interested in emerging technologies and software developments Good verbal and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills Enthusiastic about being a "Maker" (designing and building physical things) Willingness to research and learn new tools, skills, and programming languages Creative problem-solving skills Required Competencies (Knowledge and Skills): The required knowledge and skills include, but are not limited to, the following: Minimum requirements:

Running, maintenance and acute understanding of FDM 3D printing Experience with software that includes or is similar to: Cura, Flash Print, k40 Whisper, ChituBox, Easel, Adobe Illustrator, Fusion 360, Solidworks Running, maintenance and acute understanding of Co2 Laser Cutting Working with students and in a team General understanding of electronics and circuitry General management and upkeep of stock Added Advantages and Preferences: Inquisitive and explorative interest in technological advances Running, maintaining and understanding 3D printing Ability to learn quickly and a passion for new technologies Printmaking experience (screen printing, etching, lino) General Interest in being a Maker (designing and making things) Web development skills Running, maintenance and understanding of CNC Routing Running, maintenance and understanding of Large-format printing Running, maintenance and understanding of Vinyl Cutting Running, maintenance and understanding of Vacuum Forming General interest in technology Understanding of traditional printmaking Salary: R190 000 – R230 000 per annum (negotiable, dependent on experience/qualification)
(negotiable within the indicated annual remuneration range, as commensurate with the incumbent's overall experience and qualification level)
No additional benefits are on offer, other than a Retirement Annuity of which Open Window contributes towards.
