Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in the Department of Music and Musicology
The Department of Music and Musicology invites suitably qualified candidates to join their team.
Main Objectives
All academics are responsible for the dissemination of knowledge (teaching and learning), creation of knowledge (research), and community engagement, recognising that there are differences in the execution of these responsibilities within the various departments and Faculties. Academics are also expected to assume some administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at the departmental, Faculty, and/or University level.
The Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in African Music will be responsible for the teaching, learning, and knowledge creation and dissemination of African and other indigenous musics at the Department of Music and Musicology. They will furthermore seek to grow, with the support of colleagues, this aspect of the Department's offering to be the foremost programme of its kind.
The Requirements
Lecturer:
A PhD in Ethnomusicology/Musicology/African Performance Studies (with particular expertise in African Music) of any kind. Candidates with a Master's degree with a PhD currently under examination may be considered (evidence of examination is required). Candidates should have some teaching and African musical performance practice experience.
In addition, candidates are required to have the ability to teach, as well as interest in, one or more of the following areas: African ensemble inclusive of African percussion and a variety of African Musical Instruments, ethnomusicology, audio-visual technologies, audio-visual sound engineering, fieldwork.
Senior Lecturer:
A PhD in Ethnomusicology/Musicology/African Performance Studies (with particular expertise in African Music) of any kind. Candidates should have significant teaching experience and African musical performance practical experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels required.
In addition, candidates are required to have teaching experience in one or more of the following areas: African ensemble inclusive of African percussion and a variety of African Musical Instruments, ethnomusicology, audio-visual technologies, fieldwork, audio-visual sound engineering.

Selection Process:

At the interview stage, shortlisted candidates will be expected to do a short research presentation and a teaching demonstration using at least two indigenous African instruments of their choice.
Shortlisted candidates will be informed of the interview date.

Remuneration per annum:
Lecturer
Basic Pensionable Salary per annum: R600,141.00
Cost to Company per annum (Approximately): R784,132.00
Senior Lecturer
Basic Pensionable Salary per annum: R742,411.00
Cost to Company per annum (Approximately): R960,928.00
