As a Field Guide / Volunteer Coordinator, you will play a pivotal role in providing guided tours and educational experiences for guests while coordinating the activities and schedules of volunteers. This position requires a deep knowledge of wildlife and conservation, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage and inspire volunteers from diverse backgrounds.
Key Responsibilities:
Field Guide Duties:
Conduct informative and engaging guided tours of the wildlife sanctuary, sharing knowledge about the resident animals, their behaviors, and conservation efforts.
Ensure guest safety and adherence to sanctuary rules during tours and activities.
Interpret the natural environment and educate guests on wildlife conservation principles and practices.
Volunteer Coordination:
Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers participating in various projects and programs at the sanctuary.
Develop and maintain volunteer schedules, ensuring coverage for essential tasks and activities.
Provide orientation and ongoing support to volunteers, ensuring they understand their roles and responsibilities.
Program Development:
Collaborate with sanctuary management to develop educational programs and activities for both guests and volunteers.
Create engaging materials such as presentations, workshops, and informational sessions on wildlife conservation topics.
Administrative Tasks:
Maintain accurate records of volunteer hours, tasks completed, and accomplishments.
Assist with logistical arrangements for volunteer accommodations, meals, transportation, and equipment.
Safety and Compliance:
Ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations during all activities and programs.
Monitor environmental impacts and promote sustainable practices among volunteers and guests.
Transportation:
Transporting guests/volunteers/goods to and from town.
Qualifications and Skills:
Proven experience as a field guide, wildlife educator, or in a similar role within the conservation or tourism industry.
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire volunteers.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with a passion for sharing knowledge about wildlife and conservation.
Ability to work effectively in a dynamic and multicultural environment.
Knowledge of wildlife biology, ecology, and conservation principles.
Computer Literate.
First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
PDP
Education and Experience:
FGASA Level 1 (Higher level will be advantageous), wildlife management, environmental science, or a related field preferred.
Previous experience in guiding, volunteering, or coordinating volunteer programs is advantageous.
Familiarity with Mpumalanga wildlife species and ecosystems is beneficial.
