Position Title: Database Administrator (DBA)

Qualifications: Bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.Certifications: AWS Certified Database Specialty, Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, or similar. (Will be an advantage.)Experience and Requirements: 10+ years of extensive Database Administration experience in enterprise environments.Database Technologies: Expertise in Microsoft SQL Server (including T-SQL, Service Broker, Reporting Services), PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MongoDB.Cloud Services: Experience with cloud database platforms (e.g., Azure SQL Database, Amazon RDS, Google Cloud SQL), as well as data lake and data warehousing solutions (Azure Data Lake, AWS Redshift, etc.).DevOps Integration: Proficient in CI/CD pipelines for database changes using tools like GitLab CI, or Azure DevOps.Automation: Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automation scripting with PowerShell, Bash, or Python.Security and Compliance: In-depth knowledge of database security practices, POPIA and experience with SIEM tools for database monitoring.Performance Tuning and Optimization: Advanced skills in database performance tuning, query optimization, and the use of monitoring tools.Backup and Recovery: Expertise in implementing robust backup and recovery strategies, utilizing both on-premise and cloud-based solutions.Big Data Technologies: Exposure to big data platforms.AI and ML Integration: Understanding of integrating databases with machine learning models and AI tools for predictive analytics and automation.Data Governance: Experience with data governance tools for metadata management.Middleware and Integration: Strong understanding of middleware technologies and microservices architecture (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).Version Control: Proficient with Git and version control workflows.Analytics and BI Tools: Experience with business intelligence platforms like Microsoft Power BI, and integration with data sources.Personal Attributes: Innovative Mindset: Passionate about leveraging emerging technologies and continuously learning.Leadership: Strong ability to lead technical teams, mentor junior staff, and act as a strategic advisor to the business.Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.Problem-Solving: Analytical thinker with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.Team Player: Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a cross-functional team.Adaptability: Willingness to adapt to evolving technologies and methodologies.Results-Oriented: Strong focus on achieving results in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.Ethics and Integrity: Committed to maintaining the highest standards of confidentiality, security, and data integrity.Job Key Performance Areas: Technical Leadership: Serve as a technical advisor and mentor within the organization, providing guidance on best practices and emerging technologies.Database Strategy: Develop and implement the database architecture strategy aligned with the company's digital transformation goals.Security and Compliance: Oversee database security and compliance initiatives, ensuring adherence to industry standards and regulations.Continuous Improvement: Drive the modernization of existing database systems, focusing on scalability, efficiency, and automation.Collaboration: Work closely with IT project managers, software developers, and data analysts to deliver integrated solutions that meet business needs.Disaster Recovery: Develop, manage, and test disaster recovery plans, ensuring high availability and minimal downtime.Documentation: Create and maintain detailed database documentation, including data standards, procedures, and definitions for the data dictionary (metadata).Capacity Planning: Conduct regular capacity planning to ensure that database resources are optimized for current and future needs.Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with business stakeholders to understand requirements, propose solutions, and provide regular updates on project status.Monitoring and Reporting: Utilize advanced monitoring tools to track database performance, identify issues proactively, and generate regular reports.
