JOB PURPOSE:
The Container Yard Operational Controller is responsible for overseeing the movement and shunting of trucks and containers within the container yard and between adjacent warehouses. This role ensures the efficient and safe coordination of container logistics, including loading, unloading, and positioning activities. The Yard Controller works closely with drivers, equipment operators, and warehouse staff to optimise operations and minimise delays.
QUALIFICATION/EXPERIENCE:
Matric
Diploma in Transport Management or Shipping
3 - 5 years experience in a container yard or related logistics environment
Previous supervisory experience required
Straddle Carrier / Reach Stacker / Code 10 or 14 licences (advantageous)
Experience with Shift work and weekends.
Proficient in inventory management systems and yard management software
Strong knowledge of container yard operations, equipment, and safety regulations
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Shunting & Container Movement
Coordinate the shunting of trucks and trailers to ensure timely and efficient movement of containers between the yard and adjacent warehouses.
Ensure the effective loading and unloading of containers, ensuring correct placement according to operational plans and DC requirements.
Direct and manage the positioning of containers within the yard to optimise space and ensure easy access for retrieval.
Ensure the safe and smooth operation of all shunting activities, minimising the risk of damage to containers, trucks, and equipment.
Traffic Flow Management
Manage the flow of vehicle traffic in the yard to prevent congestion and ensure the safe movement of trucks and trailers.
Direct incoming and outgoing trucks to their appropriate loading/unloading bays or parking areas.
Monitor and communicate with drivers and yard staff to coordinate container movements in real-time.
Equipment & Vehicle Maintenance
Ensure the effective and proper use and handling of shunting trucks, forklifts, and other yard equipment.
Conduct regular checks on equipment and report any issues or malfunctions for timely repairs and maintenance.
Ensure vehicles and equipment are properly positioned for efficient operation and minimal downtime.
Communication & Reporting
Maintain clear and effective communication with drivers, yard staff, warehouse teams, and management to ensure alignment of operations.
Track and report on daily container movements, truck arrivals, and departures, as well as any operational delays.
Provide regular updates to the Yard Manager or Regional Operations Manager regarding the status of yard activities.
Backup to Yard Supervisor - Liaise daily with the PKL P2DC co-ordinators to receive the 24hr Inbound P2DC transport plan for all Import containers as well as the "empty" container outbound plan.
Backup to Yard Supervisor - Daily planning liaison with the PKL P2DC co-ordinators to receive the 24hr internal container "Shunting" plan for containers to be moved to Ackermans / Speciality & PEP.
Health & Safety Compliance
Ensure all yard activities comply with company safety standards and relevant legislation.
Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of the yard and equipment.
Promote a culture of safety among yard staff and ensure the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Yard Operations and Coordination
Work closely with warehouse and logistics teams to ensure smooth coordination of container movements between the yard and warehouses.
Ensure that containers are positioned and staged for loading/unloading based on schedules and operational priorities.
Maintain communication with drivers, equipment operators, and warehouse staff to address any delays, issues, or operational needs.
General Admin
Maintain accurate records of all container movements within the yard and between warehouses.
Ensure proper documentation is completed for the transfer of containers, including load manifests and yard checklists.
Conduct regular inventory checks to verify container locations and status.
Ensure the effective use of a Yard management system.
