Job Description:

Our client is looking for a strong, experienced Business Unit (BU) General Manager who will, amongst other key tasks, develop and implement effective business strategies and programs to deliver on-site operating plans and financial performance, while directing the project implementation of a complex operation consisting of many manufacturing assembly lines to ensure on-time delivery and quality to customers.

As a catalyst to this successful execution, you will drive localisation of manufacturing methods, in-company and from 3rd parties, for key components and services, including repairs and overhauls. Key to the success of the operations is talent, including the identification, hiring and training of staff, and the monitoring and motivation of a highly skilled team, to build a high-performance organisation, increase staff productivity, and ensure robust site compliance practices, highest quality standards, and safety.

You will be the face of the BU to internal customers and HQ, and external parties (customers, partners, suppliers) to drive corporate communications, present project status across the BU, develop other business opportunities, and resolve issues impacting the BU.

A key responsibility would be the focus on operational and financial performance, driving a team to develop strategies and achieve cross-functional execution across Commercial, Engineering, Sourcing, Supply Chain, Operations and Support functions to deliver on the set performance targets, in alignment with global corporate product lines and functions. You will actively guide the business on key strategic decisions, localization requirements, and optimization to ensure appropriate return on investment while managing site financial performance across all key KPIs. This includes ensuring site compliance and certifications in line with company standards, statutory regulations, and all relevant industry standards certifications.

This site, of a global multinational, must comply with government ideals and expectations, where you will understand and apply local statutory compliance requirements and guidelines (i.e. BBBEE, Localisation and regulations) to ensure the corporation's credibility and reputation are maintained with all stakeholders. A key consideration is to ensure robust project management of a long-term key-component system contract by building strong relations with the customer(s), global suppliers/partners, company product lines and global functions, and the regional corporate leadership team to effectively manage all project-related matters and commercial negotiations, ensuring acceptable project profitability.

Qualifications:

- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical or Industrial) and/or Engineering Degree/Diploma/Certificate in Project Management

Skills:

The incumbent must have extensive manufacturing experience, specifically in environments with many production lines and complexity, which can be gained in the mining, rail, or automotive industries.

Competencies:

- P&L experience with appropriate GM/VP experience, where you will have had several functions reporting to you.

- Will have senior managers reporting into the role.

- Multinational and matrix environment experience is important.

- Commercial experience is key, and one should have managed a contract before.

- You should have strong customer relations with stakeholder experience.

- Strategy experience, including setting up a strategy. Have you turned around a project, BU, or business?

- People leadership, including experience with Labour Unions and dealing with government clients.

- Operations experience with an excellent understanding of production & productivity, efficiency, quality, and supply chain.

- Good understanding of the SA market compliance requirements (i.e., BBBEE, Localization, etc.).

- Must have strong EQ and Personality, where you will be assertive but can encourage and support collaboration amongst the team.
