Research and Advocacy OfficerSECTION27 is seeking a research and advocacy officer with a strong commitment to social justice. This role is focused on health care and basic education funding and involves in-depth research, advocacy, and support in key initiatives within the organisation. This is a two-year position, with a possibility of extension, based in South Africa.Education Requirements:An honours or post-graduate degree in a relevant field (fields such as health economics, economics, development studies, accounting, finance, law, statistics, public health, or education studies are particularly relevant).Duration:Two years, with the potential for extension.Language:Fluency in spoken and written English. Proficiency in one or more South African indigenous languages is advantageous.Duties and Responsibilities:Conduct proactive research in health care and education funding.Assist in analysing and advocating for government budgeting and spending, focusing on:Fiscal policy and socio-economic rightsGender-responsive budgetingPublic health and education spendingNational Health Insurance financingTransparency and public participation in budget processesDraft reports, submissions, internal memos, legal documents, and media pieces.Support lobbying and advocacy efforts with Parliament and government bodies.Participate in mainstream and social media advocacy.Organise events such as workshops and webinars.Support SECTION27's involvement in campaigns like the Budget Justice Coalition and Imali Yethu Coalition for Open Budgets.Contribute to budget literacy training for staff, partner organisations, and the public.Participate in staff meetings, team meetings, and relevant discussions.Knowledge and Skills:Advanced research and secondary analysis skills.Ability to produce high-quality research reports.Data analysis skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel.Strong time management and analytical skills.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Personal Attributes:Interest in gender and climate justice.Initiative, with the ability to work independently or in a team.Self-motivated and passionate about social justice.Strong networking and communication skills.Willingness to work flexible hours when needed and to travel occasionally.Experience:Over two years of experience in a research-related role.Evidence of written publications beyond formal studies.Please submit your curriculum vitae and cover letter to ****** by eight November two thousand and twenty-four.
