Assistant Editor / Senior Reporter

Details of the offer

Are you focused yet curious enough to recognize the difference between a rabbit hole and an enterprise story thread?

Do you love spit-balling story ideas, follow-up interview possibilities and more with others in the newsroom?

Are you a reporter who enjoys providing collaborative feedback as much as you enjoy writing?

Can you recognize what makes a good photo — and the ability for strong visuals to draw in readers?

If you answered yes — or even "I think so" — we'd like to talk with you.

Position OverviewThe Glenwood Springs Post Independent seeks a senior reporter/assistant editor to help lead the newsroom. The position will typically have you spend about 60% of your week reporting and about 40% of your week editing and helping to guide the newsroom in our efforts to be the quintessential news source for all of Garfield County's residents.

Reporting FocusYour reporting would focus primarily on the municipal government and economic development. Most of the city reporter's coverage will be contained within Glenwood Springs, with an occasional ask for stories impacting Carbondale and the county's west end. This role requires a reporter who can foster and maintain professional relationships with city staff and other key figures in the area. As to the biggest issues on that beat, you'll have a lot to dig into.

Key IssuesOur current assistant editor/senior reporter identified traffic/road safety, tensions around growth and immigration as the three biggest issues, but also noted water rights and mobile home ownership/tenant rights as likely to grow in importance over the next year.

Editing ResponsibilitiesFor editing, we'd plan for you to lead on designated production days, working with reporters, copy editors and designers to help get our print edition out (We print four days a week). Balancing that with reporting is no easy task, but it's a great opportunity for a seasoned reporter to step up to an editor role. Ideally, you'd bring at least three years of prior daily reporting experience for a firm foundation from which to grow into the role. Spanish language experience is a plus.

BenefitsOutside of the job, you'd have the chance to live in what we truly believe is one of the most beautiful parts of the country. We don't have a lot of beaches, but we've got mountains, deserts, world-class skiing, whitewater rafting, gold medal fishing and more.

Benefits include up to a $500 annual recreation reimbursement, free shared passes to Sunlight Mountain Ski Resort, vacation and sick leave, 401K match and more.

Salary: $55,000-$60,000 depending on experience.
