To manage and oversee the utilisation and control of the aeronautical communications, navigation and surveillance (CNS) system and infrastructure to ensure safe and orderly air traffic flow in the designated airspace.
To ensure that the Air Traffic Services Unit (ATSU) provides safe, orderly, and efficient Air Traffic Services (ATS) in accordance with ICAO standards and Recommended Practices, meeting all reasonable requirements of the aviation community.Major ActivitiesAlign daily operations with Regional Operations goals and objectives, ensuring multidisciplinary coordination across the ATSU.Facilitate the execution of the ATSU's business plan to support achievement of Regional Operations targets.Collaborate with the Head of Operations in strategic and operational planning.Manage the provision of Air Traffic Services ensuring compliance with aviation regulations.Monitor the CNS system continuously for effective maintenance.Lead the development and management of the ATSU business plan.Manage the implementation of the aviation safety management strategy.Identify potential areas of synergy between different units.Regularly review operational protocols and procedures.Ensure strict adherence to South African Civil Aviation Regulations and ICAO standards.Regulatory Compliance and Quality AssuranceInvestigate reports of non-compliance with regulations and procedures, providing feedback and recommendations for corrective actions.
Monitor trends indicating potential deterioration in safety or service levels.Operations Management and TrainingSupervise air traffic services, lead operational training, and develop/update Station Standing Instructions and policies.Multidisciplinary BriefingsConduct regular briefings with operational units to ensure transparency and open communication.Coordination with CAMU and Aeronautical Information ManagementEstablish a collaborative relationship with CAMU's Air Traffic Flow Specialist and manage Aeronautical Information Management systems.Client Experience and Continuous ImprovementEnsure high standards of communication and recommend improvements in processes and procedures.Emergency Response and Incident ManagementDevelop and test emergency response plans, lead responses to emergencies, and conduct post-incident reviews.Operational Proficiency and Examination PreparationsPrepare unit orders and maintain operational proficiency of personnel.Minimum QualificationsManagement Development Program, to be completed within 12 months of appointment.OJTI qualification.Added AdvantageAir traffic control qualification (Approach control).Tertiary qualification in Business Management, Aviation Management, Operations, or relevant field.Minimum 5 years ATS experience with two years as an ATCO and two years on-the-job instructional training (OJTI qualified).Knowledge of aviation regulatory framework and ICAO standards.Skills in fostering teamwork, managing change, empowering others, and managing performance.
