JOB TITLE: Waste Operations Manager
LOCATION: Johannesburg
DURATION: Permanent
Purpose of the position The purpose of the position is to oversee the operation of the domestic waste collection, to
maintain compliance with all legislation and regulations related to the collection of waste
and Road and Transport. The role requires the post holder to challenge existing practice and
seek value for money alternatives to deliver long term sustainable economic benefits to the
company.
• Grade 12 (Matric)
• Valid code 10 driver's license.
• Diploma/Degree
• Experience in dealing with Municipalities or SOE's.
• Experience in managerial role.
Knowledge and experience required. • 5 Years of Waste Management or Logistics Operations Experience
• Record of innovation in developing and delivering beneficial change and financial
efficiencies.
• Experience of working within a performance-driven organization and against Key
Performance Indicators or other performance-related targets.
Key responsibilities of the position: • Provide management support to team members to ensure that management
procedures are robustly followed and deliver effective services that offer quality
and value for money to the company.
• Improve Waste Fleet and Yellow Plant utilisation, using tools such as vehicle
tracking, diesel consumption sheet and fleet management software.
• Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external partners including
suppliers, and clients.
• Develop staff to meet the needs of the department and to ensure all team members
receive annual appraisals and that development opportunities are supported.
• Ensure the health and safety and welfare of all subordinates and arrange suitable
training and provide appropriate information and guidance on health and safety.
• Making sure that trucks are in good operational condition to perform their duties in
the Waste Management depots and in Yellow Plant sites.
• Time Sheets are captured weekly.
• Chairing weekly operations meetings with admin staff.
• Chairing monthly meetings with drivers.
• Making sure that trucks have sufficient fuel to work a full shift.
• Prepared to work at odd and long hours.
• Oversee waste management schemes, such as at landfill sites.
• Supervise the transportation of waste to ensure that it takes place efficiently without
contaminating air, land, or water sources.
• Assist with the development, promotion, and implementation of new waste disposal
schemes.
Skills and abilities • Ability to develop good customer relations and awareness of customer care policies.
• Be able to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing with colleagues, clients, and
external stakeholders.
• To be computer literate and able to contribute to the design/development of appropriate
Excel based worksheets, as required to support the functions of the post.
• To be able to formulate and present data to support evidence led decision making.
• Ability to analyze problems and to implement solutions.
• Strong literacy and numeracy skills.
• Proven time management and organizational skills with excellent attention to detail.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to handle sensitive issues sympathetically
and effectively.
