Job Description Job Title: Unit Manager Engineering Requisition Number : KLF 0059983 Reference : KLF AD0009042 Type of Employment : Permanent Location : Operating Segment Gold West Wits Function : Engineering Job Grading : D-Upper Role Overview The Unit Manager Engineering oversees strategic engineering operations and maintenance to ensure safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness in a deep-level mining environment.
This role requires compliance with legal, environmental, occupational health, and risk management standards while driving strategic initiatives for continuous improvement and asset optimization.
Key Responsibilities Strategic Development and Compliance Contribute to strategic mine plans and align engineering strategies with operational and corporate objectives.
Ensure compliance with legal, environmental, and safety standards.
Implement and monitor engineering maintenance, risk, and operational strategies.
Manage adherence to the Mine Health & Safety Act and Occupational Health & Safety Act .
Operations and Maintenance Oversee all engineering work to support effective mining operations, including winders, vertical shafts, refrigeration, conveyors, and rail-bound equipment.
Develop critical spare parts lists and life cycle cost models for equipment.
Lead maintenance personnel to ensure compliance with procedures, specifications, and policies.
Conduct failure analysis and implement defect elimination techniques.
Project and Programme Management Drive engineering programs and continuous improvement projects.
Lead cost-saving initiatives and cash conservation strategies.
Provide active oversight of improvement programs and sustainable best practices.
Collaborate with stakeholders for the design and implementation of process-enhancing tools.
Budget and Financial Oversight Set and monitor departmental budgeting parameters in line with organizational objectives.
Approve operational expenditures and assist with monthly and annual budgets.
Identify cost-saving opportunities in collaboration with other departments.
Stakeholder Management and Communication Build relationships across the organization and externally.
Maintain open communication with stakeholders.
Manage and negotiate contracts with service providers.
Leadership and Development Manage resource capacity planning and development.
Ensure quality control, maintenance, and construction standards are met.
Foster collaboration and teamwork across functions and with external entities.
Requirements The Appointee Should Have Minimum Requirements Degree or National Diploma in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering .
Government Certificate of Competency (Mine Health & Safety Act 29 of 1996).
Minimum of 2 years' experience in a relevant field.
Knowledge of BCEA , LRA , MHSA , and OHSA Acts.
Advanced computer skills (MS Office).
Strong problem-solving, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
Effective verbal and written communication in English.
Willingness to work extended hours on an ad hoc basis.
Successfully undergo security screening and medical fitness tests.
Advantageous Qualifications Registration with ECSA , AMRE , or a relevant professional body.
