Venetia Mine is part of De Beers Group Managed Operations Business which integrates mines, operations and support function in the De Beers Group producer counties of Canada and South Africa to shape a safe, sustainable future for De Beers Group's people, shareholders, communities and partners.
Job Description The purpose of the role is to ensure that safe and optimised mine designs, budgets, mining technical inputs and short-medium range forecasts are planned, reviewed and risks controlled to support efficient mine operations and execution compliant with the plan.
Establish technical and planning systems, standards and processes to support delivery of best practice mechanised mining in South Africa, with use of supporting new mine technologies and modern best in industry practices.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS: Develop systems, management processes and routines for effective work management and medium-short range execution planning of mining technical department work, integrating into aligned, achievable and challenging operational tactics and work plans and schedules for Mining Operations Teams.
Provide leadership, direction and co-ordination of Underground Mine Engineering Team and support underground technical functions to Venetia Underground Mine, primarily - Mine Ventilation, Underground Geotechnical, Underground Survey, Underground Mine Planning/scheduling, including Underground Operational Geology function integration into mining technical and operational mine processes.
Drive improvement and innovation in underground mining technical and design & operating processes through engagement with external stakeholders, key suppliers and OEM's and internal business stakeholders.
Review, set and finalise annual budgets and technical mine plans, cascading through to business tactics and short-range plans and actions.
Develop first principle mining budgets from mine plans for equipment, consumables, labor, mining costs.
Provide key review input and guidance to Long Term Planning teams, Life of Mine and RDP work requirements.
Lead Safety by Design – create the foundation for Safe and efficient mine design to support operational systems of work.
Apply extensive knowledge and experience of Underground Mining systems and processes to lead the Mining Technical team and influence Mining Operations ensuring integrated and enabling solutions from design through to execution.
Seek opportunities to systematically support efforts in leading and improving safety in all areas of the underground mine and integrated business.
Apply underground knowledge and experience to provide decision making and judgment to problems.
Establish a detailed and integrated suite of Underground quality control and performance measures reporting and reviewing compliance ensuring high technical and operating mine performance culture.
Work within and across multi stakeholder BU & T/S Mining Teams, supporting other Heads, Leads and Principles in delivering departmental and BU objectives in support of BU and Business Goals.
Ensure effective team collaboration to combine our strengths, support each other to deliver targeted outcomes.
Qualifications The successful incumbent must meet the following criteria: Bachelors Degree in Mining, Engineering, Geology or Mineral Resources Management (MRM) Desirable: Attained statutory Mining Management qualification, worked in leadership role with statutory accountability Extensive >15 years mining engineering site based operational, technical and management experience that demonstrates successful application of underground mining engineering fundamentals, Safety, Technical Leadership and Operational mining systems.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS: Extensive Underground mechanised mining technical experience across multiple Mining Engineering disciplines – Ventilation, Mine Planning, Operations Engineering, UG mechanised survey systems, UG Geotechnical (experience with operational Geology and resource geology an advantage).
Technical management and leadership experience in efficient, productive and modern mass mining mechanised metalliferous and precious metal mining operations and mining projects in development.
(Caving experience preferred) A demonstrated thought leader and considered a respected and experienced technical leader in the understanding of how to design and technically manage a successful modern, safe & productive underground mechanised mining systems in development and production.
Proven ability of successfully leading technical Systems establishment (technical, operations, maintenance, cost), performance improvement and management in UG mechanised mines.
Safety Leadership, site planning and budgeting processes, risk control and management, emergency planning and management.
BACKGROUND CHECKS Successful candidates will be required to complete background screening which may include a criminal check, validation of qualifications and medicals.
