Technical Principal Engineer (Bridges)Location: Cape Town & Pretoria
REPORTS TO: Functional Manager
PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE This position involves professional input to a range of projects including large multidisciplinary projects. Duties include leading the functional group's aspects of SMEC projects to ensure that these are technically sound. Provide specialist professional services to clients of the functional group. This includes bidding for work, participation in multi-disciplinary design/project teams and management of projects. Take stewardship of special group wide tasks assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide high quality professional adviceIdentify and provide solutions to challenging engineering problemsAct as a technical resource as well as Project Manager as and when requiredEnsure that projects are completed on time and on budgetTrain and supervise the development of staffManage clients and maintain client satisfactionPrepare tender proposalsMaintain corporate knowledge of financial and management requirementsDevelop alternative professional solutions to be competitive in the market and be at the forefront of cutting edge technologyTechnical and financial management of projectsAssist the Functional Group with obtaining and maintaining the required resources and the technical know-how to undertake relevant projectsUndertake assessments, analysis and designTake an active interest in continuously enhancing self and group knowledge and to be familiar with the majority of relevant software that SMEC utilisesStrictly adhere to SMEC's Management System (MS), quality standards and HSE proceduresPerform monthly financial reporting tasks as required by line managerInput into the project budgets and project financeKEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS Quality and timeliness of reportingPerformance in meeting project deadlinesProvide expert guidance of engineering design issues and analysis methodsClient satisfactionSuccessful project deliveryBe flexible and cooperative in approach to work and project teamsParticipating in successful tendersQUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Bachelor of Engineering degree/higher degree from accredited university/collegeMinimum 15 years of practical experience in the relevant disciplineRelevant professional membershipsAbility to identify and provide solutions to challenging engineering problemsExcellent written and oral communication skillsProject management and leadership skillsAbility to use analytical tools including commercial softwareGood interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively within a culturally diverse and multi-disciplinary environmentKnowledge of obligations under the current SMEC MSSound knowledge of Quality Assurance (QA)
