The Teaching and Learning Specialist: Continuing Education (CE) will promote and support the University's mission that identifies CE as a strategic priority in the UWC Institutional Operational Plan (IOP 2021 – 2025) to offer high-quality, demand-driven and socially responsive learning and teaching opportunities in a coherent and financially sustainable manner. Individuals, communities, workplaces, and industries pursue continuing education programs and courses for various purposes. These include professional development, community development purposes, enhanced entrepreneurial opportunities for economic growth, acquiring knowledge and skills to address workplace needs, personal development, and cultural and sporting interests. While there is a need to generate sustainable third-stream income by offering profitable CE courses, all short learning programmes (SLP), and short courses will operate on core academic principles that will guide the design, development, delivery, and quality assurance of CE provision. Therefore, the Teaching and Learning Specialist will monitor the implementation of the CE policy and related processes regarding CE at UWC. The Teaching and Learning Specialist will work within the UWC Professional and Continuing Education unit, Pillar Seven (P7). They will provide professional support to prepare for the registration of Continuing Education short learning programmes and short courses and will act as a facilitator between the faculties, Senate Academic Planning Sub-Committee for Continuing Education, and P7. The incumbent will also assist with the marketing of Continuing Education by engaging and partnering with public and private sectors to assess the challenges and needs of the fast-changing world of work where ongoing training, retraining and upskilling are regularly required. The incumbent will report to the DVC-Academic and will: Provide specialised advice and guidance by assisting faculties, departments, and executive units with the development, registration, and quality assurance of their CE short learning programmes and courses to ensure all courses are based on sound scholarship and comply with the rules and regulations of the UWC and the Council for Higher Education. Collaborate with faculty members, P7 and other stakeholders to ensure course development aligns with university strategy and market needs. Manage the course approval process, working closely with the Academic Planning Unit and SAP-Continuing Education Committee. Monitor the implementation of the CE policy, which includes ensuring compliance with quality assurance standards and regulatory requirements for Continuing Education programs. Implement and maintain quality management systems for CE. Facilitate reviews and feedback processes of CE short learning programmes and courses to ensure continuous improvement in collaboration with the Academic Planning Unit. Manage the certification process in collaboration with the Registrar's office. Disseminate research findings in relation to CE, annually through internal reports, journal publications, and conference presentations. Undertake institutional research related to CE provision to support decision-making towards continuous improvement. Assist with marketing and recruitment strategies. Ensure that the CE website is updated regularly. Network with local and national institutional Continuing Education fora. Be prepared to serve on national task teams when approached. Provide regular reports to the DVC Academic and the Pillar Seven Director. Facilitate the design and review of continuing professional development (CPD) offerings across the university's professional departments. Minimum Requirements Qualifications PhD (at Senior Lecturer rank) or master's degree (at Lecturer rank) in Education specialising in Curriculum Development. Or A relevant PhD (at Senior Lecturer rank) or master's degree (at Lecturer rank), and a minimum of 7 years in higher education, at least 3 of which should be in programme/curriculum development. A minimum of two years of demonstrable experience in program development, implementation, and quality assurance. A minimum of two years of demonstrable experience in adult learning principles and continuing education or continuing professional development. At least three (Senior Lecturer rank) or one (Lecturer) published research output. Knowledge, skills and abilities required: Understand the landscape of CE provisioning the higher education sector. Have demonstrable experience and expertise in curriculum and programme design and development. Demonstrate familiarity with South African skills development policies and frameworks and their relationship to Higher Education. Demonstrate familiarity with the policies and functioning of South African higher education regulatory bodies, as well as the relevant higher education qualifications and regulatory frameworks. Be familiar with the various institutional policies for learning, teaching and assessment, curriculum transformation and renewal, and student success. Keep abreast of global trends in the quality management of Continuing Education. Excellent planning and organising skills, with the ability to monitor and review. Excellent problem-solving abilities and strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to encourage innovative thinking about CE.
