Tax Specialist - Mining - Sandton

Our client, an international mining company, has an open opportunity for a Tax Specialist at their head office in Sandton, Johannesburg. The successful candidate will serve as an internal expert and consultant on matters related to direct and indirect taxes for the organization, providing guidance and input as needed. They will ensure that the organization is fully compliant with tax regulations and provide support in tax-related litigation as required.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee Tax matters
Ensure complete compliance of all types, such as compliance regarding corporate tax, mineral royalty, carbon tax, customs, diesel rebate and withholding taxes in order to drive zero non-compliance threat for the organization.Oversee matters and issues pertaining to VAT.Drive movement from decentralized tax process towards a centralized one for better coordination and control.Lead effective control to ensure zero revenue loss due to issues pertaining to tax, and drive tax optimization.Drive refunds / rebates / tax dues realizations pertaining to tax.Ensure proper maintenance and zero discrepancies in the accounting books and records.Drive advocacy for crucial matters, such as matters related to cost saving, revenue leakage issues etc. and lead the obtaining of any required approvals from higher bodies for the same.Ensure transfer pricing requirements are implemented across group entities.
Tax related support pertaining to litigation
Support the progress and resolution/closure of legal cases pertaining all tax types by providing tax related expertise.Aid legal dealings at different levels such as- show cause level, tribunal level, appellate level, High Court and Supreme Court cases, in accordance with set procedures.Ensuring the organization is properly represented by consulting with professional lawyers.
Stakeholder Management
Drive day-to-day liaising with Government and statutory bodies and officers.Lead engagement with Government and statutory bodies (SARS) in order to ensure regulatory and legal compliance, facilitate auditing, resolving queries etc.Drive good relationship-building in order to inculcate a sense of trust, confidence and integrity.Liaise with external consultants and advisors to seek expertise on tax matters.Support Finance Department on tax related matters by providing guidance and advice.Liaise with Financial Manager to ensure that he/she has accurate information regarding latest updates pertaining to tax, any potential risks or threats etc.; and get any approvals that are required.
Required Qualifications and Experience
BCom Accounting Honours (specialising in tax)Minimum 7+ years of core experience in core taxation in mining

Mining tax law qualification (advantageous)
CA (SA), TA(SA)
