The South African Sugar Association (SASA) has a contract opportunity available for a Sustainability Officer (Maternity relief) based in Kwa-Shukela in Mount Edgecombe. This role will be based in the External Affairs Division. The South African Sugar Association (SASA) provides a diverse range of highly specialized services to the South African sugar industry and our activities are funded in the main by the sugarcane growers and sugar milling companies. Our mission is to provide specialist services that enhance the profitability, global competitiveness and sustainability of the South African sugar industry. Reporting to the External Affairs Director, this position's overall objective within the External Affairs Division is to provide support to the Natural Resources Department by sourcing information on various topics related to natural resources, sustainability, renewable energy, etc. to support the industry's sustainability objectives and, attends to the communication of policy or industry information to industry members and external stakeholders. Duties: Keeps abreast of policy and legislative prescripts pertaining to water resource management, air quality management, climate change, sustainability best practice and certification, renewable energy, or any other environmental sustainability topics relevant to the industry, by identifying the appropriate sources of information i.e. legislative prescripts, journals containing articles relating to environmental sustainability, etc. Conducts research on topics relating to natural resources management and renewable energy or other topics relevant to the sugar industry, by consulting a wide range of references i.e. literature pertaining to the topic Attends to the organization of reports for inclusion in the Executive Summary or other reports that are tabled at discussion and decision-making structures i.e. SRASA; SIPASE; Council and Diversification Development Committee, by obtaining and applying instructions and guidelines on the inclusion of reports into discussion packs Participates in specific meetings and attends to queries/ enquiries, by attending local and national stakeholder engagements to keep abreast of developments in national, provincial and municipal structures in relation to renewable energy and natural resource management Assisting the External Affairs Director in preparing for ad-hoc Natural Resource Working Group, Diversification Development Technical Sub-Committee and other department related meetings and contributing to discussions where required Executes meeting secretariat and coordinative applications, by checking availability on the Manager's diary prior to responding to meeting requests Preparing documentation or discussion packs and circulating to meeting delegates to provide background information prior to the meeting Compiling meeting notes, and reports and submitting to the Director for approval prior to circulating Requirements / Competencies: Bachelor's degree in environmental management, Natural Science, Sustainable Energy, Geography or related discipline 2 to 3 years' work experience in Environmental Management Computer Literacy - MS Office and in-depth knowledge of advanced Excel features and techniques Keen interest in analysis and interpretation of scientific information and the capability of working with and, merging and consolidating information from various sources Resilience together with an ability to work to and meet strict deadlines Good written and verbal communication skills In possession of a driver's license and own transport Recruitment Process: SASA follows a comprehensive recruitment process that includes the formal assessment of cognitive abilities and preferred behavioral styles
