Client based in Mpumalanga seeks the services of a Steam Turbine Resident Engineer responsible for providing timely technical solutions to the fleet of turbines installed in South Africa.
Duties & ResponsibilitiesMain Duties
Respond to customer requests for technical issue resolution relating to steam turbines using technical product knowledge and analytical skills while adhering to sound engineering principles, standards, practices, and procedures. Overall technical responsibility to support the customer in identifying plant risks and problems, recommending suitable solutions to improve plant performance and availability.
Do plant walk downs, including a comprehensive visual inspection of the plant on at least a monthly basis checking the correct operation of all accessible parts of the turbine and auxiliary systems.Advise on the required turbine history recording, such as running hours and start/stops, etc.Record monthly all significant abnormal events, occurrences that occurred on the turbine.Offer advice when informed of an excursion on plant performance.Advice, specification, and provision of procedures to enable the client to re-commission turbine plant and auxiliaries, particularly following major outage work, including attendance during return to service of turbine plant to provide "on the spot" advice if so required.Observe deviations from recommended procedures and good practices applicable to operation and maintenance.Investigate and report on turbine occurrences.Recommend scope of work for all major planned outages.Determine the maintenance requirement and the scope of work, prior to general overhauls, and specialist services required from the Engineer.Identify and optimise spares to be held to support planned overhauls and other maintenance.Compile technical specifications for plant operation and maintenance, including the recommended purchase of replacement parts.Revise, monitor, and update relevant documentation, to ensure correct application of operating and maintenance procedures.Act as a communication channel to the OEM on technical matters and information required for the operation and maintenance of the turbines.Carry out ad hoc audit reviews of operating and maintenance practices and report any deviations to the client.Provide turbine-related training as per the needs of the client's turbine system engineers and the transfer of technology and know-how to enable the client's system engineers to support the operating and maintenance functions.Assist with compiling technical specifications for the South African refurbishment turbine components.Regularly inform the client about the fleet experience on similar turbine islands supplied by the Engineer in the form of a documented report submitted on an agreed periodicity, but at least every six months.Inform the client of the latest engineering designs and developments that may improve the plant design to the benefit of the client.Be available for emergency consultation during unplanned turbine failure incidents.Provide detailed reports to relevant client representatives when requested to do so.Attend a 3-monthly technical discussion meeting.A monthly report will be submitted by the Resident Service Engineer to the client.A report will be submitted subsequent to planned and unplanned outages, with submission dates for these reports being three months after a General Overhaul and one month after a Mini General Overhaul, Interim Repair, and unplanned outage.Required CompetencesEducation
- B Tech. or B Eng. degree in Mechanical Engineering
Experience
- 5+ years experience in Steam Turbine operation, maintenance, projects, and installation
- Experience working directly with customers
- Computer skills: MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel
