Main purpose of the job:To lead analysis of climate and health data, ensure accuracy in study designs and assist with interpreting results for manuscripts, presentations, etc. to support evidence-based decision-makingThese climate and health projects include leading research groups across Africa, and universities in the EU and UKThese projects, among the largest climate change and health projects in Africa, will provide the evidence needed to mount a response to climate change in AfricaWe document the health effects of climate change on pregnant women and children across Africa, and the effectiveness of interventions to reduce these impacts and are currently expanding our scope of workLocation:Parktown – JohannesburgKey performance areas:Write data analysis plans for grant proposals and study protocolsOversee data management staffProvide support for the project team in planning, implementation and monitoring of project activities, including tracking toolsIn conjunction with the Scientific Lead and project team, oversee the preparation of data for analysis of health outcomes, and environmental exposures across AfricaWrite progress reports of data analysis for stakeholders including networks and fundersParticipate in data science analyses with other partners and external stakeholdersAssist with coordinating inputs of partners on data analysis plans in grant applicationsStay abreast with relevant data analysis advances and collaborate closely with other investigators on related studiesPublish scientific publicationsCompile conference presentationsSupervise PhD students, where relevantGenerate ideas for data analyses and novel approaches to investigating the dataOffer thought leadership on policy implications and future research needs based on emergent research findingsParticipate in discussions regarding the future direction of the research within Climate Change and Health at Wits RHIProvide thought leadership on how to best structure research activities in the team and amongst partnersSupervise and manage the data and statistical analysis team to ensure optimal employee engagementIdentify, supervise and provide clear direction to consultants supporting the analysis activitiesPerform and facilitate coaching sessions with the team to develop their skills in statistical analysisCoach and train team members to ensure the acquisition of knowledge and skills required by the organisationPromote harmony, teamwork and sharing of informationTake ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrate effective self-managementDevelop additional Data Science Skills required to undertake analysesDevelop further project management skills to coordinate statistical analysis in a teamMaintain an open attitude and respond constructively to feedbackMaintain and update knowledge of developments in field and expertise activitiesRequired minimum education and training:PhD in Biostatistics or Data Science Required minimum work experience: Minimum 10 years' experience with statistical analysis Highly experienced in implementing independent data analysis projects and running them to completion Experience leading teams of junior to mid-level statisticians Experienced working in an environment that involves the application of public health principles Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:Good writing and data visualization skillsExperience in time series analysis advantageousAbility and experience working in multi-disciplinary teamsStrong STATA, R or Python programming skillsExperience with coordination of data management teamsExperience in managing sensitive data (e.g. according to the POPI Act)Previous experience in statistical analysis of large health projects would be of added valueExperience working with large and complex datasets (e.g., remote sensing, health data, climate model data)Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlinesDemands of the job:National and international travel and overtime/weekends may be required from time to timeSelf-directed management and management of a team of statisticians or data scientistsTO APPLY:Only if you do meet the minimum job requirements and experience as mentioned above, you may submit a detailed updated CV.Please Apply Online and complete your registration on Ditto Hire (our application tracking system) to enable and protect you as a candidate to accept the new POPIA terms and conditions.
