ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH RESEACH UNIT (DURBAN/CAPE TOWN/JOHANNESBURG/PRETORIA) The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) strives to improve the nation's health and quality of life by funding and conducting relevant and leading health research. It further aims to promote equity, career development and progression.

Specialist Scientist (E) Duration: 3-year Contract The South African Medical Research Council, Environment and Health Research Unit (EHRU) requires a suitably qualified and experienced Research Coordinator. This position falls under the EHRU's Programme for Climate Change and Human Health. Applicants should have a keen interest in research related to environmental or public health.

This position aligns with two large projects being carried out by the Climate Change and Human Health Programme team. These projects focus on climate change, air pollution and health. Specific skills required include scientific writing and preparing journal publications, temperature and air pollution data analysis and interpretation and, knowledge and experience with using R software.

To cover the multifaceted aspects of the post, we require an energetic person with a strong theoretical and practical background / experience in environmental health.

Responsibilities: Publishing articles in peer-reviewed journals.To apply for research funding from national and international stakeholders.To supervise/co-supervise postgraduate students (Master's and PhD).Principal investigator (PI) and Co-PI on research projects.Review for international peer-reviewed scientific journals.Review research grants and abstracts for conferences.Give special (invited) talks at national/ international conferences or seminars.Oral presentations.Effectively manage, train and develop students and staff.Assist with the management of the EHRU and involvement in SAMRC administrative/community engagement processes.To advance transformation by mentoring and building capacity in accordance with the SAMRC's Employment Equity PlanTo develop, implement and monitor progress of the Transformation Strategy of the Unit. Core Requirements PhD in field epidemiology, environmental science or medical / health sciences 2 years working experience of environmental health issues within a research institute or related environment.2 years project management experience within environmental healthA minimum of 5 peer reviewed ISI journal articles, 3 as first author.PI on a research project and working on 1 other project2 oral presentations at international conferences. Advantageous: 2 years in a research environment, research fieldwork, data analysis, data collection, report and article writing Terms & Conditions: The SAMRC retains the right not to make an appointment.
