The purpose of this role is to develop, implement, and oversee safety and compliance programs to ensure a safe and compliant working environment. The Safety and Compliance Officer will ensure adherence to all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations, conduct risk assessments, and develop strategies to mitigate potential hazards. This role involves providing training and education to employees, investigating incidents to identify root causes, and implementing corrective actions. Additionally, the officer will maintain accurate documentation and reporting, and drive continuous improvement in safety and compliance practices.
The successful Incumbent will be responsible for the following: Assist in the overall SHE Risk Management and SHE Incident Management activities. Execute and report SHE Audit regarding compliance and effectiveness of SHE control systems Ensure that all Health & Safety policies, procedures, rules and regulations are adhered to and are regularly reviewed, updated and communicated. Ensure adoption of SHE strategies by line management to achieve set SHE goals, which are in line with the site's SHE Policy and strategic plan. Conduct daily site inspections, ensuring compliance with legislation, company SHE procedures, regulations and make recommendations. Provide SHE improvement proposals, corrective action, identify required resources and come up with a plan of implementation for the closure of NCRs issued. Plan, schedule and coordinate SHE investigations. Report and assist in investigating accidents/incidents/complaints and all other safety related issues. Facilitate risk assessments, the writing of safe operating procedures, conducting Behavioural Bases Safety Observations. Monitor employee behaviour in line with SHE requirements. Assist with conducting issue based SHE training as required e.g. use of PPE. Participating in carrying out internal SHE audits/workplace inspections and conducts follow up and verification to ensure the identified gaps are closed. Monitoring chemical, biological, physical and ergonomic hazards and advising on preventive measures to both employees and line managers. Conduct housekeeping audits and drive continuous improvement. Drive contractor management and conduct site safety Inductions Ensure that all accidents are documented, investigated and recommended improvements implemented. Any other duties which may be required by management from time to time.
Qualifications, Experience and Competencies Required: As a minimum possess: Matric and a National Diploma in Safety Management A recognized certificate in ISO 14001 & ISO 45001 implementation. The following qualification and knowledge would be advantageous SHE systems auditing Working at heights Contractor management A recognized environmental management qualification. Good working knowledge of the OHS ACT, SHE & experience in SHE management systems At least 3 years' experience preferable in a Food manufacturing or heavy industry environment. An energetic individual who can work independently & is self-driven that is willing to exceed the team objectives. A good communicator with a strong, confident and assertive personality, able to influence relevant processes at all levels and persuade others to make contributions. To be approachable and have the ability to inspire and motivate others well. Assertive, excellent planning and time management skills. Passion and drive for safety and ability to work with minimal supervision. Computer literacy and able to work on computer systems. Sound interpersonal and people management skills. A practical hand on approach with the ability to analyse, problem solve and take corrective action. Be Safety focused and promote positive safety culture.
