Sessional Lecturer - JWE 206H1S: Writing English EssaysDate Posted: 08/21/2024Req ID: 39366Faculty/Division: Innis CollegeDepartment: Innis College ProgCampus: St. George (Downtown Toronto)Description:Course number and title: JWE 206H1S Writing English EssaysIn this course, students will learn to write a research-informed undergraduate humanities essay, in part by reading and analyzing other forms of the essay, including the personal essay (creative non-fiction), literary criticism, the scholarly article, and the literary review. The rhetorical differences among the various essay forms will provide opportunities to study tone, audience, voice, purpose, and rhetorical strategies, such as tropes and schemes. Analyzing persuasive strategy and genre will help students learn about the use of evidence and the cultural assumptions at play in a text.Estimated TA support: 190 hours*Please note, the delivery method for this course is currently in-person. Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the Faculty or the College.Sessional dates of appointment: January 1st, 2025 – April 30th, 2025Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.Minimum Qualifications:MA in English literature, rhetoric, or related fieldAt least 2 years of experience teaching writing.At least 2 years of experience as a credit course instructor.At least 2 years of experience marking undergraduate writing; ability to mark carefully including for grammar.Preferred qualifications:Demonstrated interest in pedagogy.Familiarity with the range of writing ability of undergraduates.Description of duties:The Sessional Lecturer will help create a syllabus for the course and order appropriate textbooks in consultation with the Director of the Writing and Rhetoric program. The Sessional Lecturer will lecture once per week, hold office hours each week, see students by appointment, and answer questions through email.This job is posted in accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement.It is understood that some announcements of vacancies are tentative, pending final course determinations and enrolment.
