Description: This is a one-term online lecture course that introduces students to forest conservation of temperate forests with emphasis on Canadian forests and practices. It is a broad-based survey course discussing important issues in forest conservation including Canadian forestry in the world context, forest regions of Canada, forest ecology and the role of disturbances on forest development, forest certification, social aspects of forestry and human impacts on forests including silviculture, and forest management. Students learn general principles of forest biology and management and biomaterials sciences. Other related topics are urban forestry issues, sustainable forest products, bioenergy and non-timber forest products.
Class Schedule: Asynchronous online. Courses to be posted on a weekly basis.
Sessional dates of appointment: 1 May 2025 – 30 June 2025; please note that this position includes the completion of any course work and grading not completed by 30 June 2025. Estimate of the course enrolment: Approximately 75-80 undergraduate students.
Salary: Sessional Lecturer I - $9,457.90; Sessional Lecturer I Long Term - $9,930.79; Sessional Lecturer II - $10,121.77; Sessional Lecturer II Long Term - $10,326.62; Sessional Lecturer III - $10,362.76; Sessional Lecturer III Long Term - $10,570.02 (inclusive of vacation pay).
Minimum Qualifications: Preferably a Ph.D. degree or extensive experience in forest conservation; teaching experience an asset.
Description of Duties: Prepare and deliver lectures, organize guest speakers, maintain course notes and readings on Quercus, set and mark course assignments, which may include mid-term, essay and final examination or other assignment, with the support of TA; compile, record and submit final marks. Be available to students through regular office hours.
