Description: Course number and title: Sessional Instructional Assistant - JRE410H1 F - Markets and Competitive Strategy
Course description: Introduces the basic concepts, frameworks and methodologies useful to managers in crafting and executing entrepreneurial business strategies in technology-based companies. In the first part of the course, students gain an understanding of the external, internal, and dynamic environments of a business and the elements of a superior competitive position. In the second part, we focus on designing and delivering customer value, which involves strategic decisions about segmentation, targeting and positioning, and tactical decisions related to product introductions, marketing communications, distribution channels and pricing. In the third part of the course, we build on these fundamentals and examine challenges related to innovation and industry dynamics, such as industry life cycles, disruptive technologies, product renewal, and the relationship between R&D and commercialization.
Estimated course enrollment: 210 (30 per practical section)
Number and size of positions: 1 position (Head SIA) at 110 hrs, up to 5 positions (SIA) at 90 hrs
Scheduled sections: Wednesdays 4-6 p.m. or 6-8 p.m.
Sessional dates of appointment: September 1 - December 31, 2024
Salary: $52.26/hour
Minimum qualifications: PhD or Masters with a strong background in marketing and strategy. Engineering background is an asset, as is previous teaching experience.

Description of duties: The teaching and invigilation for this position will be in-person. SIA will a) Hold weekly case-study analysis sessions for ~30 students; b) grade assignments, mid-terms and final assessment; c) invigilate in-person final exam; d) assist with the development of case study material for the course; e) other duties, as assigned. Head SIA will have additional responsibilities for coordinating tutorial sessions and assisting with course administration.
