SENIOR RESEARCHER - BIOINFORMATICIAN

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
Providing sustainable bioinformatics support and data management and analysis for the students and research projects overseen by the research leader;
Performing laboratory-based investigations by undertaking technical and experimental tasks;
Providing operational, research and administrative laboratory support services for the research group lead by the research leader;
Co-supervision of postgraduate students working under the supervision of the research leader as well as training and mentorship of visiting scientists and students;
Contributing to strategic planning regarding data generation and analysis;
Coordination of research activities between students, staff, internal and external collaborators and service providers.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
MSc in applicable Molecular Biology Field with a minimum of 1 year of applicable experience in:
Molecular Biology laboratory research;
Bioinformatics and Genomics research.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
Standard molecular biology laboratory techniques;
Next generation sequence (NGS) data analysis tools, pipelines and algorithms;
Ability to prepare technical reports related to molecular biology, bioinformatics and genomics research;
Oral presentation skills;
Expertise in NGS DNA and RNA sequence data management;
Project Management skills;
Interpersonal skills;
Ability to work as part of a team;
Administrative and management skills;
Mentorship skills.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
PhD in applicable Molecular Biology field with specialisation in Bioinformatics with experience in the following:
Bioinformatics research;
Molecular Biology research;
Competence in working with NGS data.
PLEASE NOTE: All shortlisted candidates may be required to participate in relevant skills assessments and/or psychometric testing as part of the selection process.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
