Role The Senior Research & Knowledge Advisor will play a pivotal role in coordinating CIJ's research efforts and developing high-quality knowledge products.
This position requires a deep understanding of legal research methodologies, strong analytical capabilities, and the ability to effectively disseminate legal knowledge.
The role is integral to ensuring that CIJ establishes and maintains its reputation for producing authoritative and impactful legal knowledge products that enhance the understanding, reform and implementation of laws in Africa.
Responsibilities Legal Research: Conduct comprehensive legal research and analysis on various areas of law relevant to CIJ's focus areas of governance, economic development, and social mobility.
Contribute to the preparation of model legal provisions, legal memoranda, policy briefs, reports and internal publications that clearly articulate findings and recommendations for law reform.
Ensure that research outputs are evidence-based, of high quality, and meet the needs of stakeholders, including government agencies, law makers, policymakers, academics, private sector and civil society.
Policy Advisory: Provide strategic guidance on law reform, considering socio-political and economic contexts.
Engage with stakeholders to advance the adoption of legal reforms.
Knowledge Dissemination: Develop and deliver training sessions on legal reform processes.
Represent CIJ at forums, conferences, and panels.
Mentor team members and foster a collaborative research environment.
Project Management: Lead the planning, implementation, and monitoring of research and law reform projects.
Prepare project reports and updates for internal and external stakeholders.
Monitor and evaluate the impact of CIJ's research on law reform in Africa.
Partnership Management: Cultivate and nurture strategic partnerships to foster collaborations and broaden CIJ's network and reputation.
Collaborate with the CIJ Executive Director to identify and pursue new opportunities for partnership and collaboration.
Requirements A Master of Laws (LLM) degree, or a relevant postgraduate degree in Law, Public Policy, or a related field.
A PhD is an added advantage.
A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in legal research, law reform, policy analysis, or a related field, working in academia, law firms, public sector agencies, development finance institutions, think tanks, or consulting firms.
Familiarity with the legal and policy environment in Africa, with a deep understanding of challenges and opportunities for law reform.
Strong analytical, research, legal drafting, and writing skills, with the ability to present complex legal issues clearly and persuasively.
Proficiency in English is mandatory; proficiency in additional African languages is highly advantageous.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to engage in policy discussions with government officials.
Sensitivity to multicultural environments and effective relationship-building.
Innovative problem-solving skills.
Sound judgment in managing institutional risks.
