Job Description

Co-ordinate sectoral opportunities and the pursuit of industry plans across value chains.
Effective co-ordination of business development efforts in general and specifically co-ordination and prioritisation of efforts on the continent.
Drive the continuous implementation and development of the Business Development capability within IDC ensuring alignment with responsible investment policy and IDC strategy and mandate.
Provide leadership for IDC's cohort of Business Development Managers.
The Business Development Managers will report directly to the respective Head of the business unit with dotted line to the Business Development Coordinator.
Proactively source and develop bankable transactions/deals and projects within the IDC priority value chains, segments and regions together with the Business Development Managers, Sector Heads, Project Development Leads, Regional Managers and Industry Planners.
Develop pipeline, together with the Business Development Managers, Sector Heads, Project Development Leads, Regional Managers and Industry Planners to increase economic impact from existing and new clients to achieve industry development goals and the IDC's development and sustainability outcomes.
Align and implement various business development strategies and identify new markets for IDC to enter to achieve strategic objectives.
Provide inputs into IDC sectoral/value chain strategies and product development.

Qualification and Experience
QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum qualification: relevant Honours degree.
Postgraduate Business Degree or MBA preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum 10 - 12 years' experience in a corporate environment with previous focus in a Business Development / Coverage and deal sourcing / project origination role.
At least 5 years' experience at a leadership level and management of teams.
Experience in leading, initiating and developing new business strategies and opportunities to create a pipeline of development impact projects/deals ensuring deal flow and bankability.
Strong ability to develop networks and relations with local and global clients, to identify and source viable projects/investments.
Cross sectoral deal making and Coverage experience will be preferred.
Demonstrated experience in working with senior stakeholders.
Proficiency in client relationship management.
Knowledge of clients, how to identify their needs and potential solutions, translating this into actionable plans for the IDC and its clients.
Sound knowledge and practical understanding of:

global markets;
emerging industries;
public and private sector networks.

Experience in coaching and mentoring of team members.

Roles and Responsibilities
Financial / Shareholder Returns

Monitor and optimise the profit and loss of the SBU.
Maximise shareholder value in terms of industry development and development impact.
Development and management of the budget.
Ensure financial soundness of all decisions and in particular financial credibility and astuteness in transactions led by the team so as to drive IDC's financial sustainability.
Ensure developmental optimization of decisions led by the team.

Internal / Operational Processes

Provide guidance to the Business Development Managers, Sector Heads, Project Development Leads, Regional Managers and Industry Planners by ensuring the development of business development plans aligned to IDC value chain priorities and evaluating and recommending enhancements to the business development plans and implementation strategies.
Establish, build and maintain sound professional relationships with both internal and external stakeholders and business development managers, through regular engagement and communication.
Participation (in support to the Heads of the Business Units) in various HR processes e.g. talent management, transformation, succession planning and headcount planning to drive an effective people strategy for Business Development.
Adhere to reporting requirements by preparing and submitting applicable reports on the status of business development as required.
Support the development of cross sectoral expertise within business development.
Support/Lead the Business Development Managers, Sector Heads, Project Development Leads, Regional Managers and Industry Planners in originating investment opportunities based on strategic fit, developmental outcomes and economic viability.
Planning and overseeing new marketing initiatives/strategies aligned to IDC's sector and value chain strategies.
Conduct detailed market assessment: identifying, researching, filtering and prioritizing of new market opportunities to improve deal sourcing.

Customer Focus & Stakeholder Management

Client relationship management.
Work with Client Experience Management team to ensure client complaints are attended to timeously.
Gathering of feedback and taking corrective action on client queries to ensure satisfaction and retention.
Build relationships, networks and collaborate with internal and external key stakeholders and clients to position IDC as the 'go-to' funder for development financing opportunities and ensure that IDC's product offering and expertise are used to the optimum.
Building influential and sustainable relationships with strategic partners to assist SBU in achieving strategic objectives.
Close liaison with the SBU's deal-making, business development and specialist teams as well as Post-Investment teams to ensure alignment in client service.
IDC representation on Boards / Steering Committees.
Participate in internal product, scheme or fund development, as required.

Contribute towards the IDC's development of competencies and knowledge of industries.
Coaching and Mentoring of Business Development Managers.
