The Senior Mine Geologist is responsible for managing the entire geological department and overall provision of specialist geological services to the mine. This entails managing and coordinating all geological functions and providing technical guidance and leadership for optimum Mineral Resource Management.The Senior Geologist should ensure that all required data is continually gathered, interpreted and presented for Mineral Resource/Reserve estimation and extraction management. Reporting to the Mine Technical Services Manager, the Senior Geologist position is a key role in mine planning and management. The role has a management focus in that the Senior Mine Geologist will need to ensure effective planning, budgeting and management of the department and the development and implementation of technical standards, practices and procedures, ensuring industry best practice is maintained.The Senior Mine Geologist should ensure that departmental targets are achieved within organisational and regulatory requirements and that appropriate systems are implemented in order to optimise departmental performance. The Incumbent has a key responsibility for effective communication of geological information to management and the mine planning team where the Senior Geologist will be actively involved. While the role entails a strong management and leadership responsibility, the incumbent will be required to have an active, hands-on approach including regular underground visits and actively participating in mapping, sampling and core logging activities and to provide guidance and advice to the mining department.The Senior Geologist must have strong communication skills and must be a team player as a key contributor in the mine planning and management function while presenting leadership for departmental subordinates.Minimum QualificationsMinimum BSc. Honours in Geology or equivalent at NQF level 7Appropriate post graduate management qualification an advantageMinimum ExperienceMinimum of seven years' post graduate mining geology experience, preferably with three years of people management in a Mine Geology DepartmentThree years' experience in an underground mining environmentExperience in stockpile sampling and load-out grade controlExperience in underground mapping and samplingExperience in laying out and managing all aspects of grade control drilling and sampling to support mining by long hole, open stope and bulk extractionExperience in sampling, data management and reportingExperience in Mineral Resource estimation and participation in Mineral Reserve estimation and managementStrong user of MS Office suiteExperienced user of geological/mining/modelling softwareStrong knowledge of non-ferrous metals related geologyResponsibilitiesManaging and coordinating all geology department functions and activities including:Drilling, logging and core samplingMapping and sampling of faces, draw points and stockpilesAssay laboratory managementWireframing and block modelling of updated sampling and geological data and providing this to the mine planning department for extraction planningContinually manage and improve the Geology department operations including training and mentoring of staffAccurate and timeous delivery of geological information as input into ore resource and reserve estimation for mine planningFormulation and implementation of site-specific systems, procedures and standards for best practice in Mineral Resource/Reserve ManagementResponsible for metal accounting and Mineral Resource/Reserve reconciliationEnsure appropriate departmental staffing, successful teamwork and management of departmental resources
