ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH RESEACH UNIT (PRETORIA, JOHANNESBURG) The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) strives to improve the nation's health and quality of life by funding and conducting relevant and leading health research. Scientist (S) 36-month contract The South African Medical Research Council, Environment and Health Research Unit (EHRU) requires a suitably qualified and experienced Scientist (seasoned).
This position falls under the EHRU's Programme for Climate Change and Human Health. Applicants should have a keen interest in research related to environmental or public health.
This position is associated with two specific projects that are focused on climate change and air quality. The required skills include experience with air quality data collection using low-cost sensors and high-grade equipment, air quality data analysis and interpretation, experience with temperature measurements and temperature data analysis and interpretation. There is also a component of fieldwork in communities across South Africa.
To cover the multifaceted aspects of the post, we require an energetic person with a strong theoretical and practical background / experience in environmental health or related field.
Responsibilities: Contribute to development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) Co-ordination and supervising of fieldwork Co-author peer reviewed paper, proposal (accepted for funding, ethics, or peer-reviewed) Report in project meetings (report on literature reviews / methods / designs / data analysis) Research activity report writing Core Requirements: Master's degree environmental health or health risks or related sciences with suitable postgraduate training 2 years working experience of environmental health issues within a research institute or related environment 2 years project management experience within environmental health Advantageous: 2 years in a research environment, research field work, data analysis, data collection, report and article writing Terms & Conditions: The SAMRC retains the right not to make an appointment.
