Job Title: Safari Manager / Head Guide Location: 5-Star Game Lodge (Remote, in a wildlife reserve or national park) Reports To: General Manager / Lodge Manager Key Responsibilities: Guest Experience: Oversee all safari activities and ensure an exceptional guest experience. Lead and organize guided game drives, walking safaris, and other wildlife-related experiences. Educate guests on wildlife, conservation efforts, and the local ecosystem. Provide personalized service and create memorable experiences tailored to the preferences of the guests. Host guests during meals and other lodge activities, ensuring their comfort and satisfaction. Team Management: Manage and mentor the guiding team, including junior guides, trackers, and any support staff. Conduct regular training and development sessions for guides to maintain high standards of knowledge, safety, and guest engagement. Supervise and ensure that all staff members are providing excellent service and adhering to the lodges standards. Operational Management: Ensure that all vehicles and equipment are well-maintained and prepared for daily use. Plan and coordinate game drive schedules, vehicle logistics, and guide allocations. Work closely with the lodges management to ensure smooth integration between hospitality services and safari operations. Conservation and Sustainability: Uphold the lodges conservation efforts, ensuring minimal disruption to the natural environment. Collaborate with local conservation agencies and wildlife authorities on sustainability initiatives. Participate in anti-poaching efforts and ensure the protection of the local wildlife and ecosystem. Safety and Compliance: Ensure the safety of guests and staff during all safari activities. Monitor and enforce compliance with all regulations related to wildlife interaction, safety standards, and environmental guidelines. Conduct regular safety briefings with staff and guests, and ensure that emergency procedures are in place. Wildlife and Guiding Expertise: Extensive knowledge of the local wildlife, flora, fauna, and ecosystems. Proven experience as a lead guide in a similar environment, preferably in a luxury lodge setting. Excellent tracking, game spotting, and bird identification skills. Familiarity with photographic safaris and knowledge of best practices in wildlife photography is an advantage. Guest Relations: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage with high-end guests. Confidence in hosting and public speaking, with a focus on delivering educational and entertaining content. Leadership and Management: Leadership qualities with the ability to manage and inspire a team. Organizational and multitasking skills to coordinate safari schedules and operational logistics. Conflict resolution skills to handle any guest or staff issues professionally. Other Skills: Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, particularly in emergencies. Proficiency in first aid, particularly in wilderness settings. Language skills (besides English) are advantageous, particularly in guiding and hospitality. Qualifications: Professional guiding qualifications from a recognized body (e.g., FGASA Level 2 or 3 or similar certification). Valid first-aid certification. PDP (Professional Driving Permit) and 4x4 driving experience. Minimum of 5-10 years of experience in a guiding role, with at least 2-3 years in a management or head guide position at a luxury lodge. Firearm competency (depending on the regions regulations) and knowledge of weapon safety in wildlife encounters. Work Conditions: Long working hours, including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends. Remote location, with limited access to urban amenities. Regular exposure to wildlife and outdoor elements.
