Description: The Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry is seeking a Research Associate in the area of materials development, process chemistry, and heterogeneous catalysis. This position is a part of collaborative research projects within the Pulp and Paper and Catalysis Processing Centre at University of Toronto.
Qualifications: PhD in Chemical Engineering, specialized in Energy Processes or a related fieldAt least 5 years of experience in heterogeneous catalysis for energy processes, synthetic organic chemistry for sustainable fuel production, thermo-chemical conversion chemistry or related disciplinesExpertise in catalytic processes development in dry reforming of methane (DRM) reactions, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis for liquid hydrocarbon productions, CO2 conversion, and biomass gasification, gas-to-liquid technology (GTL)Experience in designing and working on high pressure and high-temperature industrial fixed bed and fluidized bed flow reactors, slurry reactors, chemical vapor reactors, micro reactors preferentially under gas phase and supercritical conditionsStrong competencies in conducting safety analyses such as HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study) and PSA (Process Safety Analysis) to identify and mitigate risks and ensure compliance with safety regulations and industry standardsKnowledge of process automation systems (SCADA, HMI) and process simulation software (ASPEN, Promax), advanced control strategies to enhance process efficiency and safetyDemonstrated experience in intellectual property management with strong patenting experience for technology readiness level (TRL) escalationStrong background in energy systems, chemical processes, and heterogeneous catalysisUnderstanding of chemical kinetics and the experimental methods for extracting intrinsic kinetics and statistical data analysis techniquesStrong knowledge of analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, and thermal conversionExperience working on and leading industrial projectsStrong competencies in analytical equipmentExperience mentoring and providing technical guidance to students, researchers, junior engineers, and team membersExperience with preparing proposals and coordinating projectsExperience with industrial programs and scale-upExperience with the safety aspects of working on high pressure industrial flow reactors, preferentially under supercritical conditionsDuties: Conceive hypotheses, design experimental plans, conduct experiments, and analyze and interpret dataReview scientific literature, execute research projects, and report on their progress through oral and written reports and scientific journal articlesCommunicate effectively orally and in writingPresent research at local, national, and international meetingsInterface with industry partners and vendors effectivelyMaintain laboratory equipment, including gas chromatography, mass spectrometer, flow, and temperature control systemsWhen needed, help support setting up new laboratory equipmentCoordinate research projects and meetings as appropriateResponsible for developing written protocols and training researchers on the latest material testingAssist the PI in preparing manuscripts and proposalsPerform other additional duties to enable the safe and efficient operation of the labNotes: This is a 12-month term position with the possibility of renewal.
