The pitch The Project Finance team is well established bringing capital and a highly competent deal team to structure and invest in deals across our markets. It arranges transactions as MLA and invests limited recourse long-term debt as lender for specific ring-fenced projects, in the infrastructure sector, across Africa and South Asia while supporting sustainable development goals.
The global Project Finance business comprises of 20 professionals across London and Mumbai and is split into two team's each lead by a Team Head: Africa & Pakistan and South Asia (excl. Pakistan)With an expanding regional execution capability into certain of our geographies including South Africa.
The team is part of the wider Infrastructure and Climate Group which also comprises of Infrastructure equity, Infrastructure and Climate Funds, Energy Access and Efficiency and Infrastructure South Asia
This is an exciting opportunity to join the team in South Africa in a newly created role to help shape the future of the region and our climate finance investments.
Purpose The Investment Manager Project Finance role has been created to enable and support the project finance business as well as the rest of the I&C Group's efforts in the implementation of its business plan in South Africa.
Reporting to the Head of Project Finance the Investment Manager Project Finance role is part of the Infrastructure and Climate Group ("I&C"), and an integral part of the Project Finance Business as well as supporting the broader I&C team's efforts to invest in South Africa. You will also have a dotted reporting line to the Head of the Johannesburg Office,Working closely with your product team colleagues the main part of the role, is to implement the strategy, undertaking business development, key relationship development and management, pipeline development as well as execution of Project Finance transactions and portfolio management. This work is in conjunction with the London product team. Additionally, for the first few years, the Investment Manager Project Finance will also be part of a JETP work group in country, supporting BII and FCDO efforts in the country.At least 25% of their time will be supporting the wider I&C sector Group in origination, execution and portfolio as well as stakeholder management across Southern Africa.Responsibilities Origination, execution, strategy, and portfolio management (75%) Drive active pipeline development, key relationship, execution within Project Finance within the country in accordance with the approved strategyAs part of the deal teams ( as deal lead or senior deal team member) on Project Finance South Africa deal, be a part of all relevant Investment Committee and monitoring discussions.Manage a team of an Investment Associate and potential secondee from the London team and coaching deal team members in your role as deal lead on deals.Part of the BII and FCDO JETP team in South Africa to co-ordinate with other international private sector DFI's from the partner countries for deployment for private sector energy transition project opportunities.Playing a role to delivering the South Africa strategy as set by BII's 22-26 strategy and the I&C Team leadership.Engage regularly with the country coverage team based in the JHB offices and support the Head of South Africa coverage in Johannesburg.Have an ongoing knowledge of the political & regulatory environment relevant to the key sectors defined in the business plan.Assist other I&C businesses as required by the relevant Team Head.Wider I&C and Coverage Support (25%) Manage key cross product I&C client and partner relationships for the region.Work closely with London I&C teams to collate, share and coordinate market intelligence and activity to support execution of wider business plan and key BII corporate objective.Support the execution of BII-wide initiatives such as the Food Security and BOLD strategies as applicable.Support wider I&C portfolio management and engagement as required by the Head of Office, Coverage Director, South Africa.Support local team planning and organisation of senior internal and external stakeholder visits, events, engagements, BII South Africa marketing as required by the Head of Office, Coverage Director, South Africa.Represent BII at external engagements as required by Head of Office, Coverage Director, South Africa.Support internal engagement activities between London and other regional offices as required by the Head of Office, Coverage Director, South Africa.Key market relationships: As climate change is the main focus of I&C's investment in South Africa our business development is primarily focused on renewable energy and water. There are a number of key relationships required:
The InvestmentManager Project Finance South Africa would be key to establishing and maintaining the relevant contacts with:
Assist with BII role in the Just Transition for South Africa as part of the UK led initiative. Engage with relevant stakeholders in SA as well as the other JETP partner countries private sector DFI teams in country.Work as part of the Project Finance Southern African Regional Origination team.Government and SOE contactsLocal development banks and Investment banks;Key relationship's with developers;various advisors including technical, legal, commercial.Key identified Black Economic Entities (BEEE) which are key to the equity team's investment thesis in SA.Develop and maintain relationships with key institutional investors on the debt side as well as the equity and funds side.Provide visibility to BII's I&C business by participating in conferences, etc.About you A proven background and track record, at investment manager level equivalent (deal lead), in international direct investment in South Africa with a regional contact network and previous experience in some of our core sectors of energy, water, ports, transport or Climate Change preferably from.Investment bank; or a Development Financial Institution ("DFI") or Multilateral Development Institution.A relevant Advisory Firm for transactions in the infrastructure sectorSuccessful candidates must have buy side project finance infrastructure experience, as a senior level transactor as a successful deal led.Exemplary proven track record of originating, structuring and closing complex infrastructure transactions in difficult environments in Project Finance transactions.Ability to work on multiple opportunities across sectors while working to deadlines and managing time effectively.Evidence of coverage expertise, relationship building and ability to develop & maintain a network of relevant external contacts, as well as internally across different teams.Excellent financial structuring skills and development of go-to-market product strategiesStrong understanding of diligence processes, technical sector issues in the power and water sector.With some experience negotiating term sheets and mandates.Infrastructure and climate product knowledge including an understanding of market practice and risk structuring experience in emerging market economies.Good business communication skills, written, verbal and presentation.Track record of competent presenting to varied stakeholders from developers, lenders, shareholders and government and high commission office levelStrong negotiator, networker and relationship builder.Track record of internal collaboration across the deal team and support teams to achieve multiple goals.Experience of strong ESG standards and the Development impact and climate ethos of BII.Our cultural values We look for team members who aspire, as we do, to work at our best and to be:
