Production Engineer (Cape Town)

Timing: Full-time role, starting as soon as possible.
About the role The Production Engineer will lead in-house production and assembly, leveraging their skills across multiple areas, detailed below:
Process Optimisation Analyse, design, and implement improvements in production processes to enhance reliability, efficiency (e.g. automated label printing), quality and cost-effectiveness. Develop, document, and maintain best practices, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and production workflows. Report on production output and related metrics (e.g. bottlenecks). Quality Assurance Establish production quality standards, in consultation with the Director of Product Operations and manufacturing partners. Monitor production and external stock assembly processes to ensure quality outputs. Enable warehouse and procurement teams with documented standards, to assist with quality assurance. Develop and maintain documentation and tools to streamline troubleshooting and resolve issues with faulty production output. Perform root cause analysis for quality issues, recommend corrective actions, and implement quality improvement initiatives. Equipment maintenance and troubleshooting Design, build, commission and/or procure test fixtures/equipment. Investigate production systems and maintain, repair, replace, improve and optimise production equipment and machinery and software. Cross-functional collaboration and project management Coordinating with test engineering and release managers on new products / production runs to ensure quality outputs. Coordinating with Field Operations and Growth teams to ensure production rates that meet business requirements. Training, coordinating and capacity planning for technicians on internal and outsourced assembly. Creating and maintaining product documentation, including drawing systems diagrams for use by installers, contractors, and internal team members. Troubleshooting, designing, executing, and/or overseeing experiments and prototype development to improve our various products. Component sourcing and procurement support as needed (as it relates to production systems). The candidate will have the opportunity to learn from a strong team in a fast-paced environment and will get exposure to a wide range of disciplines. The role is based out of our office in Ndabeni, Cape Town. We support hybrid work that is a blend of in-office and remote work. Required skills and qualificationsRequired: Bachelor's degree in Electrical / Electronics Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, or a related field. Minimum of 3 years' experience in designing, building, commissioning, and procuring custom assembly test fixtures, jigs, and production equipment for mass production. Experience in basic PCB design (KiCAD or similar) and the ability to read schematics for troubleshooting.. Some proficiency in CAD design software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) to create 3D printable jigs for production optimisations. Proficient in Python programming, specifically for writing production test and automation scripts. Experience with oscilloscopes, logic analysers, multimeters and other test equipment. Strong systems mindset and ability to grasp and explain technical concepts easily and clearly. Very strong attention to detail, good communication (written and verbal) and an ability to self-manage. Thorough and considered approach to problem-solving and technical troubleshooting Skilled in soldering (through-hole and surface mount) and proficient with hand and power tools, with strong DIY abilities in designing, building, and assembling electrical and mechanical systems. Advantageous: Ability to read and understand C, with experience in Arduino or similar platforms to interrogate production software. Experience with SQL or database management is a plus, especially for connecting to cloud storage databases and managing production test results. Experience in modern automation and code tooling (e.g. git and CI pipelines) is a plus Experience working with teams practising Agile development..
