Harrismith Area – Free State: Our client is looking for a Packhouse Manager to join the team.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of 5 years of experience in a pack house or similar role in the fruit industry. Strong understanding and practical experience with global standards and certifications such as GlobalGAP, FSSC (Food Safety System Certification), and Siza.
Proficiency in working with Vitrax or similar quality control and traceability software used in the fruit packing industry.
Comprehensive knowledge of various cooling methods, including Regular Atmosphere (RA) cooling, Controlled Atmosphere (CA) storage, and forced cooling.
Experience in managing cooling processes to optimize the quality and shelf life of apples.
Familiarity with sterilization processes as they relate to apple storage (e.g., steri rooms).
Experience with forced cooling processes for citrus fruits, as this will be an added advantage for the export market.
Ability to implement and manage quality control procedures to ensure the consistent quality of packed apples.
Strong attention to detail in inspecting apples for defects and ensuring that only high-quality produce is packed.
Proven leadership and team management skills to oversee a team of pack house staff, ensuring productivity and quality standards are met.
Proficiency in managing inventory, including tracking stock levels, ordering supplies, and minimizing wastage.
Ensure adherence to all food safety regulations and industry standards, including hygiene, sanitation, and HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) principles.
Excellent communication skills to liaise with suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders.
Strong problem-solving abilities to address any issues related to the packing process, equipment, or product quality.
Experience in budgeting and cost control to optimize resource allocation within the pack house.
Maintain accurate records related to production, quality, and inventory.
Comfortable using technology and software relevant to pack house operations and management.
A commitment to ongoing process improvement and staying updated on industry trends and best practices.
Willingness to work in a dynamic, seasonal industry with variable hours during peak production times.
Ensure a safe working environment for all employees, with knowledge of safety protocols and regulations.
Proficiency in Zulu or Sotho will be a significant advantage.
A bachelor's degree in agriculture, horticulture, food science, or a related field is preferred but not always required if there is sufficient practical experience.
Any additional certifications related to fruit packing, food safety, or quality management would be an asset.
