Operations Yard Supervisor

JOB PURPOSE:
The Yard Supervisor is responsible for the overall supervision and coordination of activities within the container yard. This role ensures the efficient operation of the yard by overseeing staff, monitoring the movement and storage of containers, and maintaining a safe working environment. The Yard Supervisor will work closely with other departments to optimise yard space, coordinate loading/unloading activities, daily container shunting and manage daily workflows.
QUALIFICATION/EXPERIENCE:

Matric
Certificate in Road and Transport Management, Warehousing or related field of study (advantageous)
3 - 5 years experience in a container yard or related logistics environment
Previous supervisory experience required
Experience with Shift work and weekends.
Straddle Carrier / Reach Stacker / Code 10 or 14 licenses (advantageous)
Proficient in inventory management systems and yard management software
Strong knowledge of container yard operations, equipment, and safety regulations

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Yard Operations

Ensure the effective movement, storage, and handling of containers, ensuring correct stacking and placement in line with operational plans.
Monitor incoming and outgoing container traffic, ensuring timely loading/unloading operations
Coordinate with transporters and drivers for efficient container handover and retrieval

Inventory Management

Maintain accurate records of container movements and inventory within the yard.
Collaborate with the warehouse and shipping teams to ensure timely and accurate updates of container status.
Conduct regular inventory checks to verify container locations and statuses.

Equipment & Maintenance

Ensure the proper use and maintenance of yard equipment such as staddle carriers, shunting trucks & trailers, cleaning equipment & other
Coordinate regular inspections and preventive maintenance to minimise downtime
Report any equipment issues or malfunctions to the Yard / RM Manager and ensure timely repairs

Communication

Liaise daily with the PKL P2DC co-ordinators to receive the 24hr Inbound P2DC transport plan for all Import containers as well as the "empty" container outbound plan.
Daily planning liaison with the PKL P2DC co-ordinators to receive the 24hr internal container "Shunting" plan for containers to be moved to Ackermans / Speciality & PEP.
Liaise with the various trucking companies to provide updates on container movements and availability
Liaise with the PKL on-site team to resolve any issues related to yard operations or container handling

Health & Safety Compliance

Ensure all yard activities comply with company safety standards and relevant legislation
Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of the yard and equipment
Promote a culture of safety among yard staff and ensure the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

General Admin & Supervision

Daily, weekly and monthly KPI and dashboard reporting.
All Inbound and Outbound truck/container paperwork
All site reticulation paperwork – Including internal shunting, storage & handling paperwork as generated by the SP's
Oversight of the internal Site 10 Fuel receipt and dispensing
Oversight and use of a Yard management system
Lead, train, and supervise yard personnel, including equipment operators, yard hands, and general workers.
Assign tasks, monitor work progress, and ensure that daily operational goals are met.
Conduct regular briefings with the team to ensure smooth operations and adherence to safety protocols.

The position requires a highly disciplined self-starter that can work independently and within a team, under pressure and meet deadlines
