Position Title
Occupational Health Nursing Practitioner
Location
Namakwa Sands Northern Operations/ (Mine Site)
Position Overview
Provides a general occupational health service on site to comply with company procedures. Takes accountability for provision of emergency response, treatment service, pre-employment medical checks, health surveillance, health promotion, risk assessments and company approved testing. Manages occupational health programs at a large facility or business sector which includes case management, injury treatment, medical evaluations and wellness programs.
Primary Responsibilities
Occupational Health Care
Ability to carry out examinations and procedures in terms of the governing legislation for occupational health.
Conduct all types of medical fitness assessments - Pre-employment, Periodic, Exit Medicals, Post incident medicals, and transfers.
Report and assist on all injuries on duty and occupational diseases.
Identify and ensure early and prompt intervention measures to affected employees and referrals to appropriate functionaries.
Assess the ability to work and the health status of the clients.
Ensure medical records are recorded and signed.
Provide a comprehensive Occupational Health Care service.
Have knowledge of HIV/Aids and chronic illness management.
Disability and Incapacity Management of cases at clinic level.
Present medical recommendations to line manager.
Provide input into incident investigations.
Participate in internal and external audits.
Develop and review occupational health standards as per DOL and DMRE requirements.
Occupational Health Screening Procedures
Provides health surveillance in accordance with current legislation and in line with company policies and guidelines.
Compliance with all applicable legislation within the scope of occupational health.
Accurate document and records management to ensure confidentiality, continuity, accessibility, and legibility.
Compliance with organizational standards and procedures for medical surveillance process.
Analysis and monitoring of occupational health exposure trends and development of recommendations to reduce control of such exposures.
Refer all Primary Health Care to the hospital or local clinic and follow up cases.
Chronic monitoring and management of cases.
Delivers a wide range of screening and occupational health activities while supporting the OH specialists.
Assesses employee fitness to work in their own or relevant alternative job role in line with company policies and guidelines.
Maintains appropriate records in line with departmental protocols on record keeping.
Prepares occupational health / primary care reports, including data verification, interpretation & recommendations.
Implements occupational health systems and programs and/or primary health care and wellness programs.
Assists in management of workers compensation claims.
Early detection and action on work-related injuries and illnesses.
Qualifications & Experience
Grade 12
Diploma or Degree in Nursing as a professional nursing practitioner - Mandatory
B.Tech Degree as an Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner or Certificate in Occupational Health Nursing - Mandatory
Registered with SANC and as a SASOHN member - Mandatory
Dispensing licence - Mandatory
Certificate in Audiometry and Spirometry - Mandatory
Registered as an Audiometrist - Mandatory
Valid driver's Licence - Mandatory
Diploma in Primary Health Care and Family Planning (added advantage)
5 years' experience in Occupational Health Nursing
Prior experience in a mining environment will be an advantage
Knowledge & Skills
Knowledge of operational processes within scope of role
Risk management techniques and critical controls
Safety, health and environment, legislative, statutory, regulatory and permitting requirements
Knowledge of relevant mining & labour legislation
Professional, task-driven, communication skills and critical thinking
Ability to work under pressure
Computer literacy, MS Office, and SAP
Manage site-based clinic as per legal requirements
