Job title: Mine Manager Job purpose: Heads the Mining Operations, all mining contractor teams, participates in company strategic planning and formulates long, medium and short-term Mine Operations plans supporting company strategy and business goals.
Division: Mine Management JOB DIMENSIONS / METRICS Approximately 600 employees and/or contractors in Mining Operations Holds statutory appointment-3.1(a) as Mine Manager (Open cast MMC) JOB TASKS: 1: Mining Operations Ensures efficiency, safety, and productivity in mining operations by Proposing and motivating annual budgets and managing expenditures within the approved budget, reporting deviations, and taking action to minimize adverse variances from budget Liaising with Maintenance Department to maximize plant and equipment safe and productive availability.
Working with the contractor mining companies to drive productivity towards achieving the mine plan Recognizing / anticipating operational, technical and safety challenges; taking action to prevent or overcome them and seeking continuous improvement Ensuring effective communication and coordination between contractors and the Mining Operations staff.
Monitoring operations, following up on reports, and taking / initiating corrective action where necessary.
Collaborating with other management team members to ensure that Mining Operations objectives are met.
2: Safety Developing sustainable mining system to ensure the safety of all employees in line with MHSAct requirements Encourages and maintains a positive safety and environment culture by continuous monitoring, taking action to eliminate unsafe or environmentally damaging behavior, and conducting safety and environment-focused meetings.
3: Profitability and Growth Contributes to the growth and profitability of the company, by Collaborating with other management team members and company executives to achieve overall business objectives.
Drive system to ensure that all commodities (Diesel & Explosives) utilized at mining operations are consumed in line with the targeted benchmark Overseeing the implementation of approved capital projects to expand capacity and/or improve operations.
Implement controls over the mining month-end certification process in line with surveyed quantities and able to drive the system to manage mining costs within budget.
Implementing procedures to reduce duplication and waste (e.g., water and power) 4: Statutory Requirements Ensures compliance with all statutory requirements by Ensuring daily, weekly and monthly engagement with all business partners on compliance requirements in line with MHSAct Continuously overseeing / monitoring mining operations and the actions of contractors Ensuring that required the submission of all statutory reporting & permits reports are submitted accurately and on time Ensuring that only trained and competent persons can access the mine to perform mining-related activities in line with company policies Enforce strict control and management of contractors on site.
Engaging with regulatory authorities to achieve mutual respect and collaboration 5: Mining Contractors Ensuring the development of robust contract management systems related to managing all mining, haulage, blasting, and dust management Enforcement of systems to monitor productivity/efficiencies i.e.
by monitoring shovel rates, loads per hour / day, etc.
Ensure monitoring of approved head counts training, safety incidents and accidents, and DMR compliance Establish a session to monitor and ensure compliance with the signed-off mine plan (spatial) above 85% Implementing robust mining systems to manage floor conditions, road profiles, waste dump management etc.
6: Department management staff performance, by Setting performance standards and goals.
Monitoring and appraising performance against standards and agreed goals; taking corrective action as required.
Identifying training needs and arranging training to enhance performance.
Collaborating with HR in the recruitment and selection of staff.
Applying the appropriate HR procedures in the process of managing staff.
6.1 Prepares (and works within) mining budgets (Operating and Capital expenses), by Submitting and motivating budgetary requirements and finalizing with the Chief Financial Officer Reporting on cost variances and devising ways of minimizing negative deviations Overseeing the planning and execution, in line with agreed budgets, of the department, managed 6.2 Provides technical leadership, by Ensuring continuous legal compliance with standards for the departments managed Managing and coordinating the teams in the delivery of reports as required Establishing and enforcing all engineering standards.
EQUIPMENT AND SYSTEMS Identifies opportunities for optimisation of mining equipment productivity across the full range of mining equipment All mining-related systems e.g., Truck & Load monitoring system, IsoMetrix (integrated risk management system), planning software / block model (where and how to mine), etc.
Working closely with the engineer to ensure the implementation of robust planned maintenance Chair and coordinate the monthly mine planning process with all business partners on the mine.
Working closely with the mine planning, mineral resources department and Geotech to ensure slope stability monitoring systems on the mine.
Working closely with the Geotech Department.
To develop protocols to enhance slope management controls Drive the implementation of critical controls within the mining processes DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS Decides on load /haul schedules and loading places, with the authority to stop the activity.
Makes final decisions on safety matters.
Deals with employees' and contractors' questions / issues, deciding how best to handle them.
Has the authority to postpone a blast; but would inform General Manager and any others affected in advance.
Makes recommendations (not decisions) on capital projects.
Having absolute authority over the mining plan and instituting change management notes in case of change in the original signed-off mine plan.

Able to work under pressure rainy weather limiting mobility in the mining/loading areas people – ongoing management of systems / compliance.
