Main purpose of the role: EDF Renewables is seeking an experienced Met Mast Technician to join our team.
The primary focus of this role will be to travel to various sites for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and widespread support of met masts, lidar systems, and solar measurement stations used in wind and solar energy projects.
The technician will also be responsible for liaising with EDF data analysts, suppliers, and contractors, managing landowner relations and site access, and must possess a high-level data analysis and interpretation skills.
The ability to compile method statements and risk assessments is a prerequisite for this role.
WindCube lidar certification is advantageous.
A valid driver's license is required, with an EB license preferred for legally towing lidar trailers.
The Met Mast Technician position is key to realizing the objective of the MSL department that all weather stations should deliver bankable data sets within timelines complementing swift project development.
This is achieved through quick deployment of good quality stations, and subsequently supporting them to deliver high quality data measurements with minimal downtime.
Key Responsibilities: Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, troubleshooting, and support for met masts, lidar systems, and solar measurement stations used in wind and solar energy projects.
Conduct regular inspections and tests to ensure accurate and reliable data collection from meteorological systems.
Troubleshoot and diagnose faults in met mast, lidar, and solar measurement systems, identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions.
Troubleshoot, diagnose and service faulty sensors, instruments and supporting hardware.
Update event trackers for masts and instruments, and log and assign new findings for further action.
Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs.
Compile detailed and high-quality reports on works performed to ensure thorough record keeping.
Manage sensor refurbishment, calibration validity, and stock levels to allow meteorological stations to be serviced on short notice and operate with calibrated instruments sets.
Manage M&I department storage facility ensuring it is neat, tidy, well ordered, and adhering to HSE standards.
Manage PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) condition, availability, and certification validity.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide technical support and guidance for meteorological station operations.
Compile method statements and risk assessments for site-specific activities related to met mast, lidar, and solar station maintenance.
Check and approve contractor method statements and risk assessments for site-specific activities related to met mast, lidar, and solar station maintenance.
Act as EDF representative on active sites to audit contractor safety file and works.
Liaise with data analysts to address and resolve any issues while on-site, ensuring accurate data collection and analysis.
Liaise effectively with landowners and ensure smooth site access, maintaining positive relationships.
Possess a sense of data analysis and interpretation skills to identify trends, anomalies, and potential issues.
Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines while working on met masts, lidar systems, and solar measurement stations at project sites.
Stay updated with industry advancements and best practices related to met mast technology, lidar systems, solar measurement stations, and renewable energy.
Requirements : Willingness and ability to climb met masts.
Willingness and ability to travel often, and for long durations and distances.
Strong knowledge of met mast, lidar, and solar measurement station instrumentation systems and their maintenance and troubleshooting.
High level of data analysis and interpretation skills.
Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and resolve technical issues.
Strong interpersonal skills to effectively liaise with data analysts, landowners, and project stakeholders.
Ability to compile method statements and risk assessments.
Good physical fitness and strength to handle the physical demands of the role, including climbing met masts.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS The position reports directly into: Head of Measurement & Instrumentation The position reports functionally into: Project Development, Engineering Center of Excellence, and Asset Operations.
QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS Must-have Qualifications and Certifications: - Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- Fall Arrest Technician with the following NQF registered unit standard successfully completed: o Unit Standard 229998: Explain and perform fall arrest techniques when working at height (Lev1; 2 cred) o Unit Standard 229995: Install, use, and perform basic rescues from fall arrest systems and implement the fall protection plan (Lev 2; 3 cred) o Must also have completed the IWH PB Board-Assessment - Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications and Certifications: • WindCube lidar certification.
• Campbell logger training.
• EB license for towing trailers heavier than 750kg.
RELEVANT EXPERIENCES Must-have years of industry experiences: - Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Met Mast Technician or similar role.
