The RTCDU is mandated with facilitating the development and/or strengthening of the scholarly academic identities of researchers at CPUT. This means that the Unit has to enable researchers to complete higher degrees, particularly PhDs, publish their research in reputable journals, establish their research niches, find funding for their projects, establish partnerships for excellent research and funding purposes, and comply with all facets of academic citizenry.The RTCDU's mandate is executed through a series of workshops, writing retreats, fostering networks across disciplines, and sharing experiences of academics at various levels across the institution. The ultimate goal is to have a cadre of highly skilled and motivated academics who feel supported and valued by the institution and who would contribute to the institution's envisaged higher number of staff with PhD qualifications, increased research output, skilled postgraduate supervisor resource base, and mentors for their colleagues.Job Knowledge, Skills and ExperienceA Doctoral degree in social or scientific sciences or equivalentFive (5) years' experience in staff capacity developmentHigher Education experience is advantageousExperience in managing the University Capacity Development Grant programme is desirableKey Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities1. Staff DevelopmentConduct strategic workshops and consultationsSupport for writing-related activities including writing retreats and financial support for editingIdentify emerging challenges among academicsContinuous monitoring and evaluation of developmental programmes and initiativesManage supervision developmental programmes and initiativesPlan long-term and short-term strategic skills development objectivesConduct the skills audit2. Mentorship and Partnership ProgrammeCareer and transformation-focused programmes and initiativesCreate and establish partnerships and collaboration aligned with CPUT Vision 2030Identify and disseminate funding, award, and advancement programmesPromote and support transdisciplinary research focused on the CPUT Vision 20303. Office CoordinationActivity planning and executionCompletion of MIS informationIdentify relevant material for trainingEvaluate teaching and learning resourcesPerform all administrative activities pertaining to training and development functionsManage the training database, ensuring that the training plan, identified training courses, and presented courses are recordedCompile statistical reports from the databaseEnsure that decisions related to skills development and training are circulated to Deans, Directors/HODs, and Supervisors of Units4. Financial Management/Training BudgetDraw up a budget for skills development in accordance with departmental and faculty skills planMonitor the budgetary expenditure throughout the financial year5. Training ConsultationAdvise senior management and HODs on matters relating to learning interventions and skills development processesEnsure that key stakeholders participating in the skills development process are educated accordinglyBe available to staff to provide training advice in respect of career development6.
