The Research Oversight and Compliance Office team works closely with research sponsors, researchers, grant and financial administration staff to support research reporting and financial audit. YOUR OPPORTUNITY: Under the general direction of the Director, Research Financial Reporting and Audit, the Manager oversees the preparation, facilitation and follow-up of audits and monitoring visits by the University of Toronto's research sponsors. In addition, Manager will apply strong knowledge of best practice in GAAP, financial management of research funding, as well as the University's policy and procedures context in identifying opportunities for and leading the implementation of continuous improvement of restricted research funds administration. The Manager will work closely with counterparts inside and outside the VPRI continuous improvement of the control framework in which members of the University's research community operate to ensure the highest levels of accountability in the use of sponsor funding while containing administrative burden, particularly on faculty members. The Manager will also oversee resolution of complex and/or high-risk situations reported by faculty, staff, sponsors, and auditors and undertake special projects as required.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
(Minimum) EDUCATION: University degree in Business or Commerce, or equivalent combination of education and experience. A professional accounting designation is required (CA, CGA, CMA).EXPERIENCE: Minimum 5-7 years of relevant financial accounting experience, University or non-profit organization experience preferred. Experience in preparing financial statements for capital and other projects of fund accounting.Experience in examining and analyzing financial records to ensure accuracy and compliance with established accounting standards and procedures. Experience working with internal and external auditors. Demonstrated technical abilities in select areas (audit, accounting, regulatory, compliance, etc.).Proven success in managing, leading and motivating a large team of professionals in a demanding environment; experience supervising in a unionized environment is an asset.SKILLS: A high degree of initiative, ability to exercise professionalism, integrity, objectivity and ethical judgment, discretion and sensitivity to confidential matters. Demonstrated ability to multitask in a high-pressure working environment and to manage irregular workload to meet critical deadlines. Ability to think analytically, exercise sound judgment and take actions to solve problems, address issues or concerns. Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people in order to foster and manage client relationships (internal and external). Strong oral and written communications skills and ability to present/communicate to both non-financial and financial individuals and audiences at varying levels within the organization.Advanced level of spreadsheet skills. Knowledge and understanding of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). Knowledge and experience with SAP an asset.OTHER: Must be able to effectively work with new and changing situations including new industry regulations; where there may not always be a readily apparent solution.
