Job Description & Summary
A career in Office of General Counsel, within Internal Firm Services, will provide you with the opportunity to be a part of the Firm's legal department by providing dedicated legal support in the areas of litigation, counselling, and corporate, commercial, and employment law. You'll play an important part in all aspects of regulatory proceedings involving the Firm and its personnel by supporting on regulatory issues, advising the Firm on matters relating to its operations, supporting the Firm's client contracting function, and advising on matters related to employees.

Role description

The PwC in-house legal team comprises a number of highly-skilled lawyers dedicated to supporting and advising the Firm to help ensure it fulfills its purpose and achieves its objectives. This role forms part of a key pillar within the PwC in-house legal team responsible for dealing with litigation, regulation and line of service counseling matters within the Firm.
Primary responsibilities for this role
The position reports directly to an Associate Director with the Office of General Counsel (OGC) and ultimately to the Africa General Counsel and the role is to be part of a team of lawyers supporting PwC across its Africa Territory (South, East and West Market Areas).
The main purpose of the role is to provide legal support to the various pillars in the General Counsel team - made up of Contracting, Litigation, Regulatory & LoS Counseling, Investigations, Data Protection, Intellectual Property and Technology as well as Legal and Regulatory Compliance.
The role includes providing assistance to various functional areas within the Firm to assist them with complying with their regulatory obligations, including, amongst others, reporting to the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority, the Prudential Authority and the Information Protection Regulator. The role will also include drafting and reviewing of various contracts, including standard form agreements and negotiating with stakeholders on amendments required.
Examples of responsibilities include, amongst others, the following:
Investigate, manage and provide assistance in potential legal,actual or potential litigious and regulatory matters, including dealing with internal departments such as forensics, ethics and business conduct and external stakeholders such as law firms
Conduct legal research and opinion writing;
Provide accurate and practical/commercial legal advice to the firm and its lines of service generally, including interpretation of applicable legislation, directives, regulations and contracts
Conduct legal research an opinion writing
Provide support to or lead, as may be required, special projects
Assist in preparation of various documents and provide assistance to the Africa General Counsel and other resources in the team
Participate and contribute to the firm's compliance activities and initiatives - including conducting risk assessments and gap analysis on key compliance matters, including sanctions, anti-money laundering, anti-bribery and corruption and competing fairly;
Drafting review and negotiation of contracts;
Assist with responses to information security incidents (such as data breaches);
Assist with learning and development both within the Firm and OGC
Competencies / Skills
Relevant professional legal qualification (e.g. Bachelor of Laws (LLB))
Admission as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa
3 or more years' post-qualification legal experience
Litigation, regulatory and commercial legal experience or knowledge highly advantageous
The ability to think critically and solve problems efficiently and practically with a commercial focus
Solid and demonstrable understanding of a regulatory environment, both from a pragmatic and legal perspective
An ability to identify and articulate potential legal and/or regulatory concerns
Self-motivated and attention to detail
Curious and driven to find practical/commercial solutions to complex problems
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to interact with staff at various levels
Strong networking qualities
Ability to multitask (work and advise on numerous projects/matters simultaneously) and prioritise
