The Health Economics and Epidemiology Research Office (HE 2 RO) of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa is an internationally recognized health research group which conducts research and analysis on issues of public health importance, including a strong focus on HIV, TB, and NCDs. HE 2 RO seeks to build the evidence base to improve health policies and programmes in South Africa and the region. We seek a dynamic, enthusiastic, and self-motivated quantitative early to mid-level researcher to be part of our health economics research team. In particular, the individual will be involved in a breast cancer study which focuses on the costs, cost-effectiveness, and benefits of healthcare constraint relaxation, and other priority public health challenges. There will be opportunities for both primary data collection and mathematical modeling. The successful applicant will be heavily involved in: undertaking evidence synthesis and literature search/reviewing/appraisal, collecting and analysing both qualitative and quantitative data (interviews and surveys); and preparing research outputs for varied audiences. Excellent interpersonal communication skills are essential as well as a proven ability to work well independently and with others, and to deliver within tight timescales.
The position is based at HE 2 RO's head office in Johannesburg but may require travel primarily within SubSaharan Africa, and possibly globally. Overtime/weekend hours and working in under-resourced circumstances will be required from time to time. One year contract with the possibility of extending for another two years.
Responsibilities and DutiesUndertake statistical analysis of datasets.Disseminate research findings through publication in leading peer-reviewed health and medicalJournals and presenting papers at conferences.Contribute to literature reviews, data analysis and elicitation processes to obtain model parameters.Conduct economic evaluations on the datasets including cost analysis, budget impact analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis and health financing.Develop cost and outcome models using Microsoft Excel and Simul8 Any other duties, commensurate with the grade of the post.Requirements• Degree in economics, health economics or related quantitative field.
• Minimum 2-5 years research experience or comparable professional experience.
• Expertise with Excel using Visual Basic and data analysis software such as R or Stata.
• Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Experience in using various research methodological designs.
• Good administrative skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Ability to travel internationally for up to a month at a time.
• Code 8 Drivers License.
