The successful candidate will hold an honours or master's degree in communication studies, digital media, journalism, multimedia or a related field. This position is ideal for a professional with a strong background in digital communication and a passion for teaching and mentoring students.Key ResponsibilitiesTeachingAssistance in the development of the honours programme that is taking place at present, and the incumbent will have to teach modules in the honours programme as well.Develop and deliver course materials that reflect current industry trends and technological advancements, particularly a strong background in the ADOBE suite, web design, media and ethics as well as general journalistic layout and design.Understanding current digital journalism trends on a variety of platforms.Foster a positive learning environment that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and effective communication.Engage in curriculum development and continuous improvement of existing as well as future honours degree modules.Mentor and advise students on academic and career paths in digital communication and design.Participate in departmental meetings and university events.Contribute to the development of innovative teaching methods and strategies specifically focused on the NWU student cohort.Collaborate with colleagues on interdisciplinary projects and research initiatives.Study guide development and updates.Administration of student marks and assessment as well as marking of all assessments and portfolios in the different modules.Provide supervision to postgraduate students in the fields of multimedia and interactive media studies.Advise students on a research, academic and work-integrated level.ResearchDoing scholarly research in the context of journalism, digital and visual communication with the aim of research outputs.Participation in research projects with colleagues.Management & AdministrationResponsible for all administrative tasks with regards to the above.Share responsibility for faculty, school, subject-group, and specialisation group assignments as required.Community EngagementEngage in various community engagement activities, including service learning, engaged research and voluntarism for the benefit of the community.Minimum RequirementsLECTURERA master's degree (NQF level 9) in Communication with specialisation in Multimedia, Journalism or Digital Communication.A minimum of three (3) years' teaching experience at a higher education.Publications of academic articles/presentation work at academic conferences.JUNIOR LECTURERAn honours degree (NQF level 8) in Communication with specialisation in Multimedia, Journalism or Digital Communication.A minimum of one (1) year teaching experience at a higher education.ADDED ADVANTAGESPostgraduate supervision at an honours level.Involvement in community engagement activities.Experience in using online learning management systems for presentation of lesson content and assessment.Functional / Technical Competencies (knowledge And Skills)Adobe Creative Suite is a must, especially InDesign, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, After Effects, and Premier Pro. Development and design of mobile applications. Industry experience could be an advantage.Technical Skills should include the proficiency in digital layout and design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator). Familiarity with multimedia production tools (video editing software, audio production tools). Understanding of web design and content management systems (WordPress, Drupal).Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Familiarity with various journalistic styles and practices, including investigative journalism, broadcast journalism, and online journalism.Mass Media Knowledge should include in-depth understanding of media theories, communication models, and mass communication research.
