Campus: St. George (Downtown Toronto) Description: The Department of Ophthalmology at Unity Health Toronto – St. Michael's Hospital (SMH) and the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at the University of Toronto (DOVS) is inviting applications for the position of Vitreoretinal surgeon. The primary appointment will be at SMH with a full-time clinical position with an expectation of at least 20% non-clinical work (research, teaching and academic administration). The effective date of this appointment is January 1, 2025.
The candidate will participate in the teaching of medical students, residents, fellows and other allied health staff in addition to adding to the body of knowledge through original research. The candidate will be required to participate on various committees in the Department of Ophthalmology at SMH to aid in the effective function of the department as well as at DOVS as required. Graduate degrees or other certified training in research methodology, quality improvement, epidemiology, data management, public health, bioinformatics and/or medical education is an asset.
The successful candidate will provide clinical sub-specialty care in vitreoretinal including on call coverage. Surgeries are performed at SMH and at the DOVS surgical center, the Kensington Eye Institute (KEI). Cross coverage to the other hospitals within the Unity Health Toronto network (St. Joseph's Hospital and Providence Villa) maybe required. Up to 30% (0.3 FTE) may be spent on non-SMH/DOVS-related activities. Experience and/or training in the management of uveitis, oncology, pediatrics, inherited retinal diseases, ophthalmic imaging, trauma and/or complex retinal surgery is an asset.
The successful candidate should possess research skills as evidenced by advanced training and publication history. The candidate must hold an MD degree or equivalent, have a minimum of 2 years of fellowship training in Vitreoretinal surgery and be eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Toronto at the rank of Lecturer or higher. The candidate must currently hold or be eligible for certification in Ophthalmology with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. This position is resourced with operating room time, clinic space, administrative space, and diagnostics. The successful candidate should be eligible to apply for an academic appointment at the rank of Lecturer, Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The SMH Department of Ophthalmology is a full academic ophthalmology unit that includes all ophthalmic sub-specialties with specific emphasis in vitreoretinal (VR) diseases and surgery. It is uniquely positioned as the vitreoretinal center within the university teaching hospitals and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The SMH VR group works closely with all the ophthalmic sub-specialties within the department and the university serving the patient population as well as interaction with the VR groups in the other teaching hospitals to provide regional/provincial VR care.
