Purpose of the Role:Management of the operations of the Class A KwaDukuza Landfill site and other landfill sites the company operates on.The Landfill Engineer will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations at the Class A KwaDukuza Landfill and other landfill sites that the company performs duties on.
As a Landfill engineer, the candidate will be responsible for all phases of landfill work from design, permitting, maintenance, budgeting, forecasting, business planning, phasing, operational reports, Health & Safety & Environment management of staff, management of yellow plant machinery and management of community complaints.The Landfill Engineer will ensure that all work performed is in accordance with all National & Provincial legislation.Position: Landfill Engineer Location: Dolphin CoastQualifications:B-Tech/BSC Civil/Rural Engineering qualification3-5 years experience in: Earthworks, Waste/Landfill ManagementExperience in managing plant and equipment specifically "yellow machines"Excellent knowledge of design and visualizations software such as AutoCAD is essentialA knowledge of the field of geosynthetics would be an advantageMust be able to communicate in isiZuluGood reporting and presentation skillsAn innovation mind-set and solutions driven approachAbility to analyse and interpret data for modelling purposesKnowledge of waste legislation would be an added advantagePrepared to work additional hours as and when requiredRole & Responsibilities:Responsible for the day to day operations of the acceptance, treatment & disposal of Hazardousand non-hazardous waste.Monthly reporting on progress with cell development, filling plans, storm water managementOversight and reporting on specific projects at the landfill.Work in close collaboration with internal Logistics and external transporters when planning disposal.Assisting with the development, promotion and implementation of new waste disposal schemesHandling and disposal of wasteCollating statistics and compiling reportsDealing with enquiries and complaints from members of the publicInvestigating and following up claims of illegal dumpingConsulting with residents, community groups, councillors, housing associations and tradersassociations about waste management issues and identifying their requirements and providing appropriate solutions.Evaluate respective data, prepare proposals and reports, and take part in other environmental consulting projects.Provide engineering analyses and calculationEnsure the monthly survey of the site is conducted timeously.Organize designs and details to produce a completed set of drawingsInvestigate and procure data required to develop a designUtilize various engineering related computer softwareCompile project specificationsComplete construction cost estimatesProvide engineering support activities required during constructionManages landfill construction projects from overseeing the preparation of construction plans to final approval.
Tasks will include managing consultants, contractors and budgets, preparation of bid documents, bid letting, contract administration, coordinating contractors, construction quality assurance firms, and materials order and delivery.Actively manages and tracks capital budgets for engineering and construction projects and report to local management and corporate using Company procedures.Coordinates landfill capacity tracking to help manage this key asset.
This will include developing projections; as well as working with senior management to develop efficient fill sequencing plans and schedules for cell construction and closure timingProvides continuous evaluation of sites for adherence to construction and permit documents and for site expansion potential through regular site visits.
Be proactive in pursuing and obtaining required or beneficial permits and/or permit modifications.Collaborates with other professionals and subject matter experts to provide innovative, cost effective engineering solutions to identified or potential operational, environmental, and compliance issues at landfills, transfer stations, hauling operations and other businesses in your area and potentially across the Company.Provide technical expertise and direction to management and other functional areas such as finance, legal and safety to present a clear path to resolution.Participates in review of acquisitions and coordination and evaluation of divestitures, including proforma modelling assistance and interaction with corporate and executive management during due diligence.Assists in training and provides mentorship and supervision of technical staff assigned to your team.Participate in regular budget review to ensure that budgets are achieved, ensure and develop optimization and efficiency programs for optimal equipment utilization, equipment maintenance, and labour and material costs.Ensure that KPIs are developed and assessed on a regular basisScheduling material and equipment purchases and deliveriesEnsure projects run smoothly and structures are completed within budget and on time.Provide advice and resolve any emerging problems/deficienciesSupervise/Manage contractor, subcontractor and staff and mentor staff and liaise with a variety of stakeholdersQuality Health & Safety:a) Ensure health and safety legislation and contractual obligations pertaining to health & safety areadhered to.b) Overall responsible for the Health & Safety of the landfill team, responsible for Health & Safetystatistics, LTI, MTI and ensures the team follows all legislation and rules pertaining to the site.c) Responsible for creating and modelling a safe work environment; demonstrates safety practices.Promote pre-task planning for all projects.d) Ensure that toolbox talks are maintained and risk assessments are regularly updated.e) Conduct Root Cause investigations for all injuries and incidents that occur on site, ensuringdiscipline and preventative measures are adhered to.OtherAttend all training and safety inductions pertaining to this position.Liaise with clients, suppliers, consultants and contractors on technical aspectsInteracts with partners and other companies in the groupProduce presentations and/or represent the company at trade fairs and seminarsPerform any other duties required by your designated ManagerCritical Outcomes:Perform all duties as per latest ISO 14001, 45001 Quality Standard Requirements.Function as part of a team.Ensure total confidentiality of all information, internal and external, pertaining to the business of the Company, all its employees and management.Communicate with stakeholders in a professional manner.Maintain discipline in the organisationActively promote a positive working environment and a sense of belonging among all staff.Participate fully in all training interventions made available and promote a culture of training and development within the company.Become familiar with, comply with and promote all company policies, procedures and administrative processes.Utilise your work time gainfully and productively to meet the companys objectives.Promote a positive and professional company image at all times
